Completed my 1913 Liberty Nickel Catalog set.

For years I have been working to get all of the auction catalogs that included a 1913 Liberty Nickel. I thought I was down to just the Farouk sale (The Palace Collections of Egypt), when I found out about a little mail bid sale from 1946 that included one. After years of looking for an affordable example of the Farouk catalog, I picked one of these up earlier this year. This only left the "Numismatic Fine Arts, Mail Bid Sale #2" catalog from 1946. The ANA has a copied so I borrowed it to check it out. It has a small listing and does have the coin imaged in the plates.

Well, the recent Kolbe and Fanning had one in a lot with another catalog (mail bid sale # 9). I was the winning bidder and the catalog just arrived. It is in excellent condition. I will now need to get a photo copy of the prices realized (the ANA copy does have them)

Now, just like with coins, it is time for upgrades. In this case, it is getting these in hard bound.

This sale also did have a special Heritage catalog, that only included the single 1913 Liberty Nickel lot from 2010. I was out bid on this (never knew they existed until this sale). It also included a hard bound edition of the Hydeman sale from 1961. I did pick this one up. There was a Leather bound copy of the Farouk sale, but this went for over $700.

So, now I should try to get the Eliasberg catalogs in hard bound (I have the Gold catalog from 1982, but not the sales from 1996 and 1997). I do have the Reed Hawn Sale and the Jerry Buss collection catalogs in hard bound.

Heritage has auctioned 3 of these, I have the PDFs of the catalogs, I may just have to print the specific pages and create my own special edition catalogs for these.

I wonder if TDN has a special copy of the "Orlando Sale", given his 1913 was in it.

What a cool idea. I never thought about collecting something like that.

That is a unique and cool collection.
I also never would have thought of something like that.

I wonder why that 1946 sale was pushed back 2 weeks?

Congrats on a job well done.

I could have tried to do this with catalogs included the 1804 Dollar. The 1884 Weyl sale catalog, that included the Dexter 1804 dollar, only went for $4700.

I had no idea catalogs were valued so highly...not surprised that people collect them though...Cheers, RickO

If you don't already have a copy, you might be interested in the book "Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman." This includes previously unpublished information on his set of 1913 nickels, as well as a wealth of numismatic information. You can buy it from Heritage's website.

Thanks for the note. I do actually have both a hard and soft bound copy. The signed hard bound will stay nice and I use the other as my working copy. Truly a great read. Learned a lot reading the book.

That's an interesting twist on forming a collection of numismatic auction catalogs.
