An interesting article is scheduled for publication in the November/December journal of the Medal Collectors of America (MCA).
First Post-War New Orleans Mint Production
"Conventional thought is that following the Civil War the New Orleans Mint did not produce anything until February 18, 1879 when it was pressed into service to strike standard silver dollars required by the Bland-Allison Act of March 1878. For standard coinage that is true, but the only southern branch mint to return to public service as an operational mint actually struck its first official products in the autumn of 1866."

Interesting!
RE: "...when it was pressed into service to strike standard silver dollars "
OK---OK---Sorry about the pun.
Does the article (to be published) detail what coins/medals were minted?? Cheers, RickO
Yes -- and tells why, for whom and approximate quantity.
Nice teaser. Do we know who the designers / engravers were? Will the article cover whether the engraving was done locally or where else, such as at Philadelphia?
Looking forward to it.

Yes to all the above.
I'm told the Nov/Dec issue with the article will be out in the latter part of December.
