Angel Dee's Toned Buffalo Nickel Collection goes to Auction
![BryceM](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/161/n0E1FT88U8BL8.jpg)
So I just got an ad in the mail from Legend Coin Auctions about Angel Dee's fabulous nickel collection that will be part of their XIX Regency auction on Dec 15. I think I've maybe only purchased a single coin from Angel Dee's over the years but I've enjoyed talking to them at shows. This was especially true at the Portland ANA show where it was so slow that taking time to talk with a collector was no problem. I saw the set again at the recent Summer ANA show in Anaheim.
I have to say that the photos in the ad DO NOT DO THEM JUSTICE!!! I'm no toned buffalo expert, but the set is absolutely stunning in person. Unfortunately the ad makes all the coins look exactly the same with a dull gold/yellow drab color. These coins have spectacular flash, eye appeal, and deep luster. I've done enough photo and print work to know that it isn't always easy to get nice results in print but here the photos don't even look like the coins.
I hope interested bidders have the opportunity to see the set in person. It's worth a look!

Those are some amazing toned Buffalos.
I'll second that!
Andy and Alynne have assembled the most remarkable set of toned buffalos one could imagine. Each is stunning...they leave you reeling.
Of course they of the highest grade...conditional winners. But it is the eye appeal that is so breathtaking. I can't imagine how it would be possible to capture their beauty in pictures.
I truly hope the auction is a smashing success. And that my friend, crazyhounddog, snares one or two so he can share them with us.
Lance.
I have seen these coins in person. They are all the most beautiful Buffalos I have ever seen! Words cannot describe them.
I have also seen these coins in person and they are simply some of the nicest Buffalos ever put together!
Andy and Alynne even let me look through this entire set...truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. I do believe that the entire set is imaged, quite well at that, on their website
Lincoln set Colorless Set
Hopefully, the photos that Legend will post and those printed in the catalog will be better than the brochure they sent out. I know that Angel Dee;s left their pictures posted, so if you're interested, go to their website to see them, individual photos AND the entire set.
A very impressive set of Buffs.... Cheers, RickO
They may be amazing in hand, but they are very ho-hum in the Legend catalog.
The images on the Angel Dee website are much more impressive. Thanks for linking those @knightem .

I've never understood why auction houses will take their own photos when better ones (or TrueViews) are available.

Whoa! For the first time in 108 years, RickO likes a set of toned coins!![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Damn nice set. Thanks for the link.

Yes I've seen this collection and it is amazing. Words can not describe how very beautiful each and every coin is. It truly is something to behold. I would guess it'll sell for a large chunk of money.
Andy is a very nice guy and I call him a mentor of mine. If he opens his mouth to talk coins it would be a very good idea to listen up. He is without question a seasoned collector. When it comes to buffalo nickel's, he is the man.
Good luck with your auction my friend.
@messydesk
but I really was admiring the quality of the coins...not the tarnish. Cheers, RickO

Not to burst your bubble
How many do you think are original? Certain people are known for coloring nickels and then selling them.

Just an opinion: This set is outstanding for its quality. It really should have better images than the prosaic ones available thus far.
I also had the great pleasure of seeing this collection of Buffalo nickels at a Santa Clara show. I saw them with Crazyhoundog (he if awesome Buffalo nickels himself). We were both blown away at how great this set is.
Good luck in the sale.
I have seen this set and I know the man. My opinion is they are all very much original as can be, and very, VERY attractive. Andy has a great reputation in the business. I can not say enough good things about him, a true gentlemen and friend.
In all due respect, Andy coloring coins is ridiculous and laughable in my opinion. Like I said I know the man and anyone else that has had the pleasure of meeting or or doing business with him will tell you he is very ethical and respectable. No way he would ever put his reputation at risk to color any coins.
Ditto on what is said about Andy and Alynne. Look at these coins, there is such a large variety of color patterns and the coins look very different so any notion of coloring is absurd. I shouldn't even have to justify the notion that is absurd, it just is.
This is also not a put together set that took a year to do. This has been a work of passion over many years. I first saw this set about 6 or so years ago, and it was started well before then and has been upgraded to replace coins that didnt fit over and over.
What if I told you he told me he colored a proof buffalo that I owned. Look who he partners with on coins. I owned the number 2 and 3 finest known proof buffalo sets. Do you know who colors the proof buffalos? It is not a secret who colors the buffalos, a different dealer.

Just my 5c worth...
While I respect the opinion of others, be careful what you say or imply about someone who is not here to defend themselves.
You're comment was about proofs and these are mint state, but putting that aside, I know Andy and he as never colored any Buffalo, so you must be talking about someone else. Further, he kept swapping coins in and out of this set for 12 years trying to find the best example of each date, so you're talking hundreds of coins over a long period of time. And as for "parterning", he shouldn't automatically be guilty by association. In addition, they are also all in PCGS Secure holders with many graded PLUS, so PCGS must not have had any issues with them.
Just sayin...
I see speculation regarding the toning, comments on the integrity of the dealer and observations on the images. I've known these folks for years and don't see them in any way toning those coins. I've also seen many of these coins in-hand and thought they were quite colorful. If anyone has issues with the quality or character of the Legend images then they may do very well to look at the images on their site.

Beautiful Buff Set !
Andy did not have a wonderful 1926-S cent to sell me but found a top graded PCGS 1926-S cent that would meet my standards and allowed me to negotiate directly with another collector/dealer if I liked it enough. Indeed, I loved it.
I submitted it to CAC and it almost got a gold sticker per JA. But I was quite satisfied with the green sticker!
That's a stunning set of Buffalo's!
It is a stunning set, both in person (at last year's ANA show) and in the photos on their website. I really, really, dislike the photos in the catalog/brochure as they are much yellower. The Legend photos pick up the golden/yellow toning, but miss the mauves/purples that are what makes the coins so spectacular.
This is the kind of pedigree I hope is preserved on the slab label - just as we celebrate Bass and Green and EPN for having the eye to pick great coins.

Dealers who know their stuff, know what coins they want in their own collections, or in ones they build for others. I am sure that Andy would easily be able to tell an artificially toned coin from an original. No doubt. I think his pedigree enhances the collection beyond what they would be if they were anonymous.
This is a great opportunity to see the real deal. Take advantage of it.
Did I miss the link to the collection or sale?

I heard that Legend has responded and updated this brochure online with different photos to better show the images. Hopefully, they should be more accurate than the printed brochure that was sent out.
In addition, Angel Dee's left their pictures posted, so if you're interested, go to their website to see them, individual photos AND the entire set.
I got one too. Really an impressive set. The nicest set I've ever seen.
I own a few buffalo nickel's I bought from Andy. They're all standouts in my collection.
Ditto. Excellent customer service too.

Really surprised by this type of comment. Aside from calling out a top dealer with a stellar reputation you call into question the grading abilities of our host here. Everyone is entitled to opinions but the post is IMHO without merit hence my reason for jumping in here to post my three cents.
Are these CAC beaned?
Oh I see, some are, some aren't...that would make me assume (perhaps wrongly) that CAC denied the bean to those without it.
An out take from the New Legend Market Report .........Mark
We do thank everyone who came to see our display of the $1 1795 SE PCGS MS65 CAC, the Northern Lights Collection, and the Angel Dees Buffalo Nickel Collection. A note: we appologize for sending out a poorly imaged flyer on the Buffaloes. We had problems transfering the images to the paper. That has now been corrected and we have the new images posted on our web site. We do care very much about images and presentation. - See more at: http://www.legendnumismatics.com/market-reports/the-baltimore-show-3/#sthash.tR7meGxA.dpuf
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I would not believe you.....
The artificial toning of coins is a major problem in our hobby. People know beautiful toned coins sell for lots of money. I'm certain Angel Dees or any other longtime dealer or collector, for that matter, has heard and seen everything under the sun about artificial toned coins. I'm sure our host has seen their share and are constantly battling the problem every time a submission of toned coins come in. Do the major grading companies even guarantee the toning is natural on the coins they grade? They do not unless this has changed. Search of the archives, what year was it when they stopped. I think they gave a few examples where they lost tons of money. The toning on coins is always questioned whenever we buy coins. What becomes acceptable comes from what we have learned from our experiences.

Neither do the pictures. In fairness they have admitted they botched the photos. I would not be happy if they were mine. Hopefully they will right the wrong.

Let's see what they bring at auction as that always determines what they really are. Everything else is conjecture.
Legend does a very good job IMO. I am very surprised that they allowed such poor work to be sent out to their customers. I hope they are paying better attention to detail in the future. There is no way those brochures should have been mailed out. Toned coins need to be correctly represented in photos to draw the attention of buyers of such material. Not everyone can attend to see these toners in hand. A white coin is a white coin in pictures but toners are a whole different story. You depend on good pictures.

Comparing to the printed brochure, the one on-line is MUCH better, but of course in-hand they're even more fantastic. Best of luck to the consignors. Glad to see that Legend recognized the issue and did what they could to correct it.
Cameoproofcoins-- why would you even come to this post and say something like this? U only make yourself look like a fool. Having met Andy personally and having an extensive conversation about different coins which were mine and his i couldn't ever see this ridiculous accusation being true. He is one of the most genuine and nice honest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He has an endless knowledge of numismatics and puts his heart and soul into his business and his collection that he builds. Get a life and stop trying to slander someone who you are maybe jealous of.

Just amazing!!!
Thanks for sharing this.
Haven't had the pleasure of seeing this in person, photos are all I have to enjoy. And they are stunning!!!
Happy, humble, honored and proud recipient of the “You Suck” award 10/22/2014
Like I said earlier I've seen this collection in person. I have held the 35-S in my hand along with others but, that 35-S 67+ is just AMAZING! I gotta say the 21-s is also over the top and the images, no matter how well done, do not do these buffalo nickels justice. Each and everyone of these nickels are just as Beautiful as can be. A sight to behold![<3 <3](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/heart.png)
While it is still "up" it might not be a bad idea to save the PDF of the entire collection.
I have.
It's too cool to forget.
I'm pretty addicted to toned lincolns, and toned coins in general, so Andy and Alynne shared this set with me over the years once or twice while they were building it. Having just completed my 140 piece toned wheat cent collection helps me appreciate the sheer difficulty in obtaining a toned piece in every date and mint mark. More difficult that you can imagine.
And that many or most are among the most eye appealing for their date/mm is just awesome.
These guys are a Class A act and I hope the positivity from MOST board members here prevails. And I hope this set sells well to collectors who will individually appreciate what they have obtained.
Might be worth the trip just to see them!![:+1: :+1:](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/+1.png)
BTW, IIRC, his "partner" once paid 69K for a beautifully toned commem.
I don't think he would do that if he could make them.
Unless you like spending money on attorneys, I would delete that post.
