What is it worth today, TDN?

Whatever the next highest bidder is willing to pay for it. While I would guess there have been offers, an auction would settle the question, Weiss.

FWIW, it is the most beautiful and historically important US coin issued.

I'm excited to have the opportunity to share the entire set with my fellow collectors. Many thanks to PCGS for making this display possible!
granted they are pre-93 but what about the continental dollar, bar cent or several other post 76, pre-93 issues?
the uniting of the colonies represented on the chain cent via links is right up there for me despite the multi-use of chains, some purposes not so favorable; but the same could be said of the material the coins are made from or the body authorizing the striking, or... ok, went a lil afield.
to stay on point, since there are several over $5m currently and MANY over $1m, going over $10m again is inevitable. Look how low the SP66 sold for, really not all that long ago. the last 3-4 times experienced big increases each time.
if a few had been higher grade that went to auction in the past 10 years, lets say matching condition, they'd most likely blow past $10m imo.
i know it is the what-if game but we're kinda playing that here, right?

Another important U.S. coin is the 1849 Liberty Head Double Eagle. It was the first U.S. $20 gold coin ever minted. It's estimated value is about $50M but some believe it would bring more, if it ever came to public auction. That will never happen, though, as it is the only one known and is housed in the Smithsonian Institution.

For a coin that has been so thoroughly researched, it's strange that Marvin Browder and I were left off the provenance. (Between Sconyers and Superior.) Anyway, it will be fun to see the coin again.

Truly a beautiful coin.... Cheers, RickO
Oh? I wrote the check to Stacks and it started with a 10.
As far as the jump bidding goes, we figured the coin was going to sell right around $9M....and our shock&awe strategy took into account our opinion that if it was going to sell for $9M then it might be better for it to sell for $10M+. Whether you agree or disagree with our strategy, it was indeed a viable strategy.
im not getting into all this but that is just darn funny!
there are at least a couple lengthy threads about this coin and its $10m price tag.
the marketing price thing seems obvious and i recall the simple, yet lucrative strategy of having the first public auction of a coin hammer for $10m. artificial or otherwise. idc.
there are many museum pieces that could hurdle $10m. anyone want to list out more public pieces that fit the op's inquiry? i'd love to rehash this stuff for the umpteenth time. seriously.
id just dig up old threads but i need more time with the search feature since it is resisting my master-level archive diggin' skillz. >:-|

J-1776 would sell for $10M+
Good excuse to take a few hours ride down 75! Looking forward to admiring this incredible set.
So much for accurate provenance! It was one of the most advertised coins of the 1989-1990 coin market, and no one remembered that? I know I remembered it. If only for the $1 MILL ask price at its peak.
And David Hall didn't see this coin for the first time until 2003? That's really odd. This coin was one of the centerpieces of the Amon Carter sale, and then appeared in major sale(s) of the 1990's iirc. I would have thought anyone in the upper food chain of the 1984-1993 coin market would have seen this coin.
1849 $50 union a $50 MILL coin? I don't know about that....how about 1/3 or 1/2? And J-1776 worth $10+ MILL is about as sure a bet as you could ever find. How about $15 or even $20 MILL?
