Tom Pappas passed away

My friend Tom Pappas passed away last night after a short illness. Tom collected and put together sets of many U.S. coins, but his specialty was Lincoln cents. He had several sets of PCGS certified sets of Lincolns and several albums of BU sets. Tom did not join the boards, but he always lurked and I could never convince him to put his coins into the Registry Sets. Tom was a quiet guy and you probably saw him at shows around the Baltimore/VA area. Tom was at the first show I promoted in Maryland and always came out, as he would say: "to support your show." We used to get together for breakfast in Brunswick, Maryland and talk about coins, go over the coins he wanted in Heritage Auctions and to generally shoot the breeze.

Of all the people I have known in my life, I can say that Tom never had a bad word to say about anyone. Tom always had a word of encouragement and always wanted to know what I was teaching the students at the university. Once I called his house, his wife told me he was in Nebraska and asked if I wanted her to call him for me. I told her no, that I would talk to him whenever he got home. Within 5 minutes my phone rang and it was Tom. His words were: "Mike, what's up?" I told him I was teaching on a certain subject in business and asked him what he thought. He gave me great insight from his business expertise and finished with: "Be sure to tell the students...." I will miss Tom and will be praying for his family, who I know will miss him.
