Jefferson Nickel Variety Of The Week: 1939 Doubled Monticello (FS-801)

If I had to choose one coin that is the cornerstone of my collection, this one would be it! Everyone knows about this Jefferson Variety, which makes it very popular. I take a quick look at almost every 1939 reverse just to make sure, even if very circulated. I've been fortunate to have found a few over the years. I have to admit this particular coin is not one that I Cherry Picked....darn! Let me tell you a story that I found to be a little amusing. This coin is posted on ebay and I received a question/comment from someone which was simply, "You are dreaming". I think this person was referring to the price I have this listed for? I replied: "First, you assume I want to sell it and second, find another one nicer!". No reply!

I have seen many MS coins and a few of the ones fortunate enough to have the "Full Step" designation and this one just rocks it all the way home! It's a coin with super luster and no real distracting marks. I would like to compare the steps on this coin to all the other coins with the FS designation. My guess is, they don't get any better than this one!

Enjoy! Happy Hunting!

I have one that is an ANACS circulated grade.
I think it's one of the coolest varieties.

Most certainly well known. I've seen ads for this variety dating back to the early 40s so it was spotted not long after it was minted. It's my favorite Jefferson doubled die.

I concur - fantastic coin and my favorite Jefferson. Don't forget about the cool doubling of FIVE CENTS as well with this variety....

I guess this explains why many of these are in nice circulated grades like the '42- D/ D.

I need to re-photograph mine that I found roll-searching several years ago. (Yes, I know it's ugly...but it only cost me 5 cents!)

this is one of the better known Jefferson Nickel varieties. my only comment would be that despite the high grade I find the affect of being struck from heavily abraded dies a bit distracting, at least in the picture. it might look better in-hand but I can't help but wonder how booming the luster would have been from the fresh die pair. also, I think being LDS contributed at least in part to the crispness of the step detail.

this is my second favorite DDR Jefferson, I like the 1945-P better.

I found one in circ about 30 years or so ago. Not mint state, if I remember, more like XF.

As I've stated many times here-die state is a critical but often overlooked component of doubled dies. The difference between an early die state and a late die state is pretty dramatic on nearly all doubled dies and should not only be noted when one is for sale but also be noted on the slab right along with the grade. This is already done with a few select doubled dies, such as the 1995 1-O-V cent.

Yes, but it still is one! ;)

But not quite as far as mine was! :)

We could turn this into a thread to find the least valuable example of a major variety. Actually...I'll start another thread on that topic...could be fun to see what it yields.

very nice looking coin. I found in change from a candy vending machine back in 1980 when I was in pharmacy school. Mine was almost worn-out and grades no better than VF. The 4 pillars are just barely visible, but the doubling is still evident.****
