It's funny actually... I just realised after reading some other threads that you guys have commented on, that sushi had outbid me on some recent PWCC auctions. The BGS9.5 CB#1 for under $1500 and the BGS8.5 #101 for under $8k... Drool inducing low prices.
I started out collecting pre1993 PSA 10 Jordans. Now all I buy is pre-fleer #57 Jordan cards. Star is my favourite, however, I wouldn't mind adding these cards into the my collection too:
1.) 85 Bulls Interlake
2.) 85 Prism jewel
3.) 85 spanish merchante - Blue back
4.) 85 spanish merchante - Red back
4.) 86 spanish merchante

I think Steve Taft made the above comment (??) Apparently there is no hard evidence though.
If this proves to be true down the road... Spinfadesplash23 you may be sitting on the holy grail of signed basketball sets! $100k plus in the future?
Cool thread. I'm pretty sure the 101 card came first but I could be wrong of course here's my thoughts to why.
The court kings came in blue and yellow bags with yellow being the first half and blue the second half. The Jordan of course is in the blue set. The yellow set may predate the 101 but I doubt the blue does.
The photo for the Jordan court kings was taken on Feb 10 1985 at the All star game.
The 101 shows the Bulls playing the nets at the Meadowlands. In the 84/85 season possible games for the photo would be:
12/14
1/16
4/13
Since two are before and ones after I'm going with the odds. Of course the photo date doesn't necessarily date the set release. I would be interested in knowing which came first the 1985 Slam Dunk set or the Blue Court Kings set as Jordan's photos for both came on the same day.
I'm interested in seeing if there's a signed 1985 Star Jordan slam dunk card out there. I've briefly checked and I don't think PSA or BGS publishes pop reports either to know if one does exist. I'd also be interested to see if there's a signed checklist card for the set. This sets checklist is by far the best checklist in sports in my opinion too. Thanks for the insight.

It's definately a good looking card but I'd rate the 85 slam dunk, court kings and slam dunk checklist as better looking cards. I've just never seen an autographed version of 1 and 3.
Yes I agree just not sure the sig would present well on them? I was just saying out of the two #101's I would choose the signed one if money wasn't an issue..
Love the Star cards both for their color and the era they capture. Some great images. The Star MJ has long been one of my favorite cards in the whole hobby. Hard to find a fairly modern card with that combination of low supply relative to such massive demand. Not to mention how as a kid, the Star cards were listed in Beckett and were so hard to find at local shops; it gave them an aura of mystique, almost mythical status.
Regarding how BGS grades the Star 101 MJ, I find my eye can't see the difference between 7.5 and 8.5 centering subgrades. This creates good value for the collector, in the sense that one can find a card with mint attributes in all other respects that grades out an 8, and saves us a bundle.
For the Jordan 101, I agree that the left-to-right centering is very tough and also that BGS is seemingly very inconsistent in how they grade the centering.
However, just as big of an issue is the top-to-bottom centering. The BGS 9.5 and BGS 9 signed cards posted above are both great cards; anyone would love to have them. But it's also obvious that they're both substantially off-center top-to-bottom. Why does BGS ignore this? When I look at these cards, the top border is like a big red two-by-four hitting me over the head!
BGS grading inconsistencies and just outright mysteries on these centering grades is a main reason I hope PSA would also grade Star cards someday. If graded by PSA, that BGS 9.5 would be a PSA 9 (OC). And the BGS 9 signed would be as well.
I hear you knight rider! It bothered me too to when I started collecting star cards. Initially I started out collecting late 80's and early 90's cards which have way better centering than earlier cards. My Psa 10 Jordan's from this era are straight as an arrow.
Nevertheless, I may be wrong, but I believe the 84-85 star card top to bottom centering is determined by the back of the card. I would love to see a card with good top to bottom centering on front and side to side centering on the rear if anyone has one?? I think the top to bottom centering was a design fault probably by the low budget manufacturing... thoughts?
One thing that really bothers me too....(1st world problem) is that it appears a lot of the 101's have have a slight curvature in the cut on the top edge. I have noticed this on a few high graded cards.
Anyone else noticed this?
Taking all of the above into consideration... I still kick myself every time I look at my star cards. These cards were a mythical urban legend.
To me, owning a star co. Jordan is one of the best hobby experiences I've ever had!
Just added these two to my growing Star collection.

Obviously the 84-85 being his first year is more popular just like 1986 Fleer hoops compared to 1987 or 1988. What would you say is the fall off between 1984-85 to 85-86 price wise and popularity wise?
I believe it's based on supply and demand.. 84/85 rookies will be worth more than 85 and 86 cards of the same players. However, supply is also so low on 85 's and 86's that prices should remain high. I believe the star cards are 50 times more scarce than the fleer counterparts, nevertheless, a large proportion of collectors will only buy Psa cards.... and Psa don't grade star cards.

After years of searching, I was able to obtain one of my bucket list collection items. I recently bought a collection which included some unopened Star basketball bags. I can't remember seeing one of these publicly offered for sale in recent years, although it probably has, so I feel very fortunate. Here it is. 1984-85 Star Court Kings 5x7 unopened bag which includes of course a Michael Jordan rookie card right on top in quite amazing condition.
Also, two other unopened Star bags I picked up this month I wanted to share. Both contain early Jordan cards and condition of top and bottom cards look strong. The Miller Lite All Stars and Gatorade Slam Dunk sets. Both of these bags are relatively scarce as well.
FYI- If you're looking for the Jordan RC team bag ungraded, there is one on eBay for only $500,000 OBO. Of course there are others for a fraction of this. Why do people waist their time listing ridiculous stuff like this?
Here is a recent pickup. The 1984-85 Star #195 Olympic Card is notoriously off center especially on the back where part of the #195 is often cut off making it really tough to find MINT.
Is it me or is the Barkley rookie plagued by bad edges? I know that sounds weird to say but I feel like every time I look at a 9 Barkley rookie it has iffy edges. I finally just gave up and got this one. I'm okay with the 9 centering because it's the crazy BGS centering where they think it should be lower (I disagree). Seems like there's no escaping the funky right edge of the Barkley rookie.
I’ve been working on all the Celtics sets trying to get them all in 9.5 but have settled with 9s on a few because some either don’t exist in a 9.5 or the pops are extremely low. I’m not sure why these are so cheap for the high grade scarcity because they are really nice looking cards with the bright borders and color action shots.
Nice to see this thread revived, although it is a dangerously slippery slope for me to follow this thread as it could lead me back down this expensive rabbit hole. Nice cards everyone.
The Olajuwon rookie is so tough. First, it must be an SP because there's only been 307 graded. Of those, only one 9.5 and only twenty-nine 9s. Heck, there's only seventy-one 8.5s. It's notoriously off-center left to right. Mine has 8 centering but I'm fine with it. While it has the usual L/R issues, it also gets hit because it's centered higher than BGS likes, which is where I want it. To me, it's crazy to look at a modern card in 8.5 and not only think of it as "high grade" but to be thrilled with it, only 30 higher. But that's one of the things I like about Star basketball.
I just bought a large collection of Star cards 1983 - 86 and am really enjoying them. Amazing colors and photos. Lots of cool subsets. I've caught the bug.

Yes I will post some pics after I go through them all. No unopened bags. But it was a complete set run with every subset and all 5x7s, except Crunch N Munch, Mr. Z's, 86 Franz Blazers, Denver All Stars and Best of Old/New, and missing all the Jordans, Barkley RC and Wilkins RC. So I will be in the market for the Barkley and Wilkins, the remaining subsets and some of the Jordans, just not 84 #101. My goal would be to have the complete issued Star Company collection including SPs, and I would throw in the Best of the Best and the Magic subsets at some point.
