Gold Kennedy half found searching rolls!!!

PocketArtPocketArt Posts: 1,335 ✭✭✭✭✭

Well, gold plated...found this 1984-P gold plated half searching a box of Kennedy rolls. It has 1960 - 1980 over motto. Must be some organizational presentation piece, and got spent for what it's worth...anyone ever find stuff like this searching rolls?

  • I've put a couple into circulation a few years back. Got them in a misc. box of coins at an auction.

    Surprises in rolls are fun.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Put in on Ebay. Never know what you may get for it.

I found a gold-plated Bicentennial half in a roll once. I sold it for a buck or two at the coin club auction.

It's weird, the past couple of months I've searched around 12,000 halves in rolls and had the radar on looking for silver, varieties, proofs, gem bu's, business strike- pl's, and any other mint made oddities. Stumbling across something like this in circulation is probably equivalent to a creepy clown sighting- doesn't belong there, and just plain wrong. :o

Especially if you sell it as a 1984 half dollar that was released in 1980, counterstamped 1980 and gold plated to alert the banks to withhold it from circulation for 4 years.

I have found proofs before and of course, silver.
Roll searching can be fun! :)

Practicing the picture posting with CU hosting, now that the feature is restored [:applause;]

here are a few of these, usually they are dated before 1980, yours is the first I've seen dated after, as these were initially produced to commemorate 20 years since Kennedy's election. I've got a "certificate of authenticity" around somewhere..

Well don't keep us in suspense. What did you find?
Back when I was searching halves, I also got a lot of strange stuff. Most common were halves painted red or blue, though I don't remember what those were from...

Thanks for all the feedback and appreciate the description Baley. Your request GritsMan- sure! It was heartaches and pleasures searching the rolls. The 1973-D prooflike was machine wrapped and has wheel marks...would have otherwise been a Gem.

Here is a rundown of what I found:

    38 silver clads
    4 90%'s including a Franklin
1 1974-D DDO Pretty close to a MS65 if not one
    4 1971-D's FS-101 range between MS64-MS65
    3 1982 no "FG" variety
    4 1970's dated PL
    3 1980's dated PL
    3 1990's dated PL
    2011- D and 2015- D PL
87 mixed date ranging from MS64-MS66; most are MS65
    6 proof's including 2 1969-S

Here are a few pics of finds- Kennedy and Franklin, 1974 PL, 1973- D PL "heartache" wheel marks on obverse, 1974- D DDO.
