I missed this announcement, if you did too then here it is!!!

Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a bill back in June which removes the Sales Tax on coins and bullion in Ohio. Hopefully this means that dealers, promoters and most importantly, major shows will return to Ohio.

I would like to see Central States return to Columbus and the ANA return to Cleveland. Despite what some think, Ohio is a great bastion of coins and collectors, especially Northeastern Ohio. Back until the 1970's Cleveland was widely known as "The Best Location In The Nation" based on industry, culture and the fact that at the time approximately 50% of the Nations population lived within a 500 mile radius.

Things have changed in the past several decades but the area can offer a lot as can Columbus, Cincinnati and the Toledo areas. Come back central States, come back ANA!!!!

Culture in Cleveland? LOL I do think it's great that Kasich and the Legislators have corrected a wrong. Shame, I would have voted for Kasich. Seemed like a straight forward guy in the debates.

You should have a good CPA who keeps you abreast of these types of changes. image

Good for Ohio, there seems to be a nice surge of states over the past several years getting sales tax removed from coin and bullion sales.

    Congrats Ohio.

I wish Alabama would do the same thing.

Thank you California for keeping the sales tax on coins as I believe taxes make my state a better place to live.

Just a matter of getting the tax $ by other means.

But being that I don't live in Ohio, and I buy coins, that's a win for me.

I'd travel to Ohio before I'd ever go to the Baltimore shows.

There's not much going on in WV with regard to major shows.

I ran into a trucker from Ohio at a truck stop in CT yesterday, I was on my laptop and he mentioned his love affair with coins and in passing the taxes on coins which he loves and their effect on coin sales in Ohio. Also the Noe scandal that triggered it. He showed me his business card which said "Trucking and Coins"!

Indiana passed a similar law last year. Good law. I would also like to see more of the big shows and such come back to the Midwest. Seems like everything is out east, Florida or California.

As a Californian, I buy very little from California dealers because of the tax on coins. It used to be a good place to live but not anymore, planning on moving very soon.

The Calif. sales tax on coins is for purchases under $1,500.

    Above $1,500, no sales tax.

Could be better, but it's better than a kick in the head.

Yes I have known about that but not really thought about it until now as I am a dealer and have a resale license so I do not pay sales tax as I resell them.

But now that I have thought about it, It seems a Tax on the lower income collectors and it gives the wealthy ANOTHER pass on paying taxes. Kinda weird.

Rather than have Calif. Sales tax on every coin purchase,

isn't it better than there is an exemption at some level?

It was $1,000 in Calif. for many many years - and when

the State thought about either raising it to $1,500, or

eliminating it entirely, our thoughts were, at the time,

'well, $1,500 is about an ounce of gold', so we accepted

that $1,500 exemption over having NO exemption whatsoever.

Yes, that benefits the 'gold investor' who buys an ounce of gold

(then), but it also benefits collectors who can, and do, spend

$1,500 at a time. Does it benefit everyone? Of course not.

Another way to word that is, "Does it punish everyone?"

  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,939 ✭✭✭✭✭
No, a lack of any exemption would punish everyone.

Well that make no sense at all.

Tax benefit society on the whole, all Californians "benefit" from Ca Sales Tax

I don't know if this is necessarily true.

I think this debate has a lot in common with the much bigger debate in our current politics. I have never understood why everyone gets worked up about taxes on coins. it seems from Fred's example in California that there's some "point" where everyone agrees. here in Ohio the dealers lobbied(my boss paid into a fund) and I think the Government looked at what came in via the Tax vs. the revenue that was lost because it was in place.

how much revenue does a show like the ANA generate??

No, but housing cost is about 3x as high as most other places. My brother just bought a virtually mansion with a large yard for less than what I paid for an average 3 bed room house with no back yard in L.A. And let's not even talk about taxes and restrictive laws. The only thing I still like is the weather, BUT with the sunny weather everyday and no rain, we can't even water the grass because of the drought.

I don't want to turn this into a political post, so let's just say you can have your fruits and nuts and I'll enjoy my honey with a boat load of cash somewhere else.

Let me put this back into the context it came from -- buying and selling coins. Fred asked about the exemption if it would benefit everyone, then asserted that of course it wouldn't. I changed the wording to ask if the exemption would punish everyone (i.e., charge everyone sales tax), and of course it wouldn't. How the state of California collects and distributes taxes in general is far beyond the scope of that comment.

Cleveland actually is one of the most "cultural" cities in the US. Cleveland has one of the best museums in the US, AND one of the best symphonies in the US. There was a LOT of money there during the industrial era, and there are still a variety of wealthy civic minded individuals that live in Cleveland and the surrounding area.

We argued in Ohio that a threshold on sales tax like California would tax the collectors who could less afford it. We convinced the legislators that the buyer of a few ounces of silver a week were just as entitled to the break as the investor who wanted to purchase 10 ounces of gold. We were lucky that the members of the house and senate passed the bill so overwhelmingly that a governor hoping to be a president had to listen. He had line item vetoed the bill the year before less than an hour before it would have become law without his signature.

Whatever the reason we are grateful that we can soon be competitive in pricing with our tax free neighbors. Thank you governor and better luck in four years.

Those of you reading this that are not members of ICTA should strongly reconsider joining. We collectively must have a national advocate to look out for our collecting interests. Collectors should consider a donation. Without ICTA most of us would be paying a sales tax on our purchases. There were a lot of collectors and dealers here in Ohio that were willing to let a few of us shoulder the work and financial obligations. Don't be complacent and risk either loosing your exemptions or not gaining them in the first place. Step up and be proactive.
Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

How much a show may bring into the state is less an argument than the retention of money in the state versus how hard it is to get it back. Every state has a figure of how much it costs to bring dollars into the state and how once it is their how long it remains. We argued that wealthy investors were sending large amounts of money to dealers in other states (especially Michigan- UGH!) that needed to circulate, and recirculate in Ohio. It is very difficult to get those dollars back once they are gone.

Cleveland was reasonably "cultural" in the past, but it's population has just been plummeting over the last 50 years and the downtown is pretty weak. Much of the "culture" is now in University Circle. Clevelanders are generally proud of their city and point proudly to things such as their symphony.

In general I'm for anything that reduces the amount of money our government can inefficiently spend. However, I do question why collectable coins are given special rules over other things? I understand bullion makes sense as it is money.

    .

    fwiw.

ive heard the exemption(s) doesnt cover all of numismatics. from more than one source.

i'd really recommend those w/o a RRMC find out as well as resellers as they/we need to know as both ways are highly illegal.

collecting tax when something is exempt and not charging it when something is not.

this may have been covered in other threads via this topic as it has been discussed in several threads over the past months. for IN and OH.

In reference to California and taxes... I lived in California for years... leaving was one of my best moves.....While the natural resources are beautiful, the plastic people (in the major cities), the high taxes, liberal politics, ridiculous cost of living, gangs etc., make it one place I will never return to.... with the possible exception of a flight layover on the way to somewhere else. Personally, I detest California... JMO... Cheers, RickO
