Most of MS62 coins look much nicer than average MS62. I don't know if because the images were captured in better lighting/angle or the coins were just above 62 grade. With the average price per MS62 coin was $4000 back then, I think owners of the MS62 coins can break even at best today. I really love the 65s and 66s.
Friend of mine bought the finest known 1866-s $10, an absolute gem+ (in fact it probably the nicest $10 Lib I have ever seen) but he paid a lot for it when it came out, and I told him enjoy it, because if he ever had to sell it, don't know how well he would fare
I consider those coins no more than a fleeting interest. They are gold coins, with a somewhat interesting backstory which is lost in a short time...it really adds zero value to the item. Never understood why people pay premiums for such things... Cheers, RickO
From what I have seen, very few have come into the marketplace. The ones I did see were cracked out the PCGS holders and got a nice bump from NGC; quite a few of these were conservatively graded.
As for me, I did purchase an 1889-S in MS-63. The price was just below the guide at that time, it was one of the few dates that were priced within reason. I enjoyed the story and intend to keep the coin along with the case. When I mention this coin along with the backstory to non-collectors, they definitely show interest.
Yes the hype has died down now, but this is still one of my favorite coins in my collection. Isn't that (a hobby) what's it's supposed to be about?
