Grading Question with FB and Etc.

I recently purchased a Roosevelt dime graded MS67 by PCGS. And in looking at the reverse, I agree with the coin grade not including the FB designation. My question is this... Is there a grade where the FB designation (or FS designation for Jefferson Nickels, FBL designation for Franklin Halves, etc.) is required to achieve the high grade? Since one of the components of the MS grade is the quality of the strike, I would expect at some MS grade the FB designation would become a requirement.
I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

That is an interesting question. It's possible that graders view 70 that way, but I can't imagine a special striking not being full anyway. There are many non-FB 68s and I believe there are non FB 69s too.

Don't know if this would be a requirement for silver dimes. I think that there has been plenty of silver 68's without the designation and only 1 69 graded silver dime that I am aware of, and it didn't have the designation either.

To me the numerical grade is determined by lack of marks followed by luster.... full bands are not required and are really determined by how new the die was not condition of coin produced.

Did you ever own the 46-S in NGC 69*?

I'd love to see those mercs!

  • I'm wondering whether the FB, FS, FH, FBL, etc. designations are similar to the RB or RD designations on copper coins in that it adds depth to the grade but isn't part of the grade.

I have 67's and 68's without those qualifying designations..... seems not to be a requirement. I have always preferred strike and surface in my coins... Cheers, RickO
