Dealers - How are sales these days?

Hi folks,

I was talking to a couple local dealers today and both were saying sales have been unusually poor the past few months. Have others had a similar experience? Does it seem like the market overall is continuing to decline or is there an indication of some stabilization at this point?

Any thoughts would be interesting to hear.

I have never had great expectations for the summer months.

Summer and coins just don't seem to mix.

It's a good time to buy, though, and there are several local shows that are usually quite good in the summertime.

However, this June I had the best June in 10 years.

So I was cautiously optimistic this summer.

July was up 50% from last year...although last year was softer than previous years...but still a good sign.

August was VERY slow (down 30% from previous year), and so far September has been dead also. September is always tough with back to school expenses, etc.

I always count on Oct-Dec. 1st and from Dec 26th-middle of March for about 70-75% of my annual sales.

That's just the way it has been for me.

Others may likely have different scenarios.

  • People are paying record high prices at the auction sites ie: Heritage, GreatCollections, Legend. Dealers are not faring nearly as well. Currently buyers are willing tp over-pay for coins at auction sites rather than purchase the same coins cheaper from dealers.

I have had similar experiences though sold a fair amount in August. At many of the smaller coin shows vest pockets just go there to look for buying opportunities, often not selling anything.

Lots of bargains in the auctions for quality coins compared to historical prices....but these may not be cheap tomorrow.

Sales are slow but on the buying side many auction wins way below market value. I only buy if really good deal I feel there is good chance flip for more money.

Talking to some acquaintances (online, coast to coast), it seems to be a bit slow... however, most agree that late August through September is usually slow. All are looking for an uptrend as the holidays approach. Cheers, RickO

Maybe the material at the auction sites is of higher quality?

There's always a market at the high and low ends... and given the current economy there is also consistent activity in bullion, 90% etc. but the mid range collector stuff is soft right now. As we get into fall that should start to pick up again.
