Found in "Family Hoard"

The wife's family has a tradition called the "found money jar". Essentially, if you find a coin or note, you don't spend it. You put it in the "found money jar", and it serves as your emergency money in times of need.

We have 3 "found money jars", (actually, cans), that recently made a re-appearance as we unpack slowly in our new house. One my wife initiated, one came from her Mother, and one from her Grandmother! I was assured that final jar would be loaded with money "older than me".

Well...either the jars have been "sampled", or they aren't as old as family lore made them out to be. In fact, one had over $100 in quarters....and not one of them silver.

It wasn't a total loss. The smallest can did contain:

- 9 Wheat cents, (1940S to 1958D)

- 1 Silver Washington Quarter (1934)

- 1 War Nickel (1943P)

- 4 Silver Roosies (1947S to 1964D)

- 6 Mercury dimes (1919 to 1945)

- 1 Spanish 1957 5 PTAS

- 1 Canadian 1953 Quarter (silver?)

- 1 tiny 1970 1 Pfennig from Germany

- 6 Ike dollars, and 6 Kennedy halves

Oh, well....I can think of worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon....

Check the 1919 Merc. dime for the obverse doubling if you haven't already.

A great way to spend a rainy (here) afternoon.... I have a couple of 'jars/boxes' that have been stored for many years...however, there always seems to be a more pressing issue to deal with on such days. Oh well..winter is on it's way..and on a snowy day, I will tackle this issue...Cheers, RickO

I see two 1972 Ikes, one P and one D? Check the P reverse for a Type 2. Ya never know!

Haven't done any variety searching yet....my eyes gave out somewhere around 1/2 way through the second can of coins.

Maybe tonight, when the wife will tell me to, "Get this crap off of the desk! I'm working there tomorrow!"

The 1953 Canadian quarter is 80% silver, so intrinsic value right now is $2.88.
