Looking for info on this 1864 two cent piece

Good afternoon,

I am curious about this coin and looking for some insight. The coin appears to have a die break in the word STATES from the letters A through S continuing into the O of “OF” But the O has some other issues that do not appear to be from a die break. In addition, the inner circle of the rim is totally out of whack which I presume to be PMD, but the coin itself is fairly symmetrical/round. Looking for comments and insight. It is an 1864 coins. Thanks

Die cracks, often large ones, are common on coins of this era. I don't know that a date in the Shield nickel series is known sans die cracks.

Thick spikes protruding from the "O" are advanced die cracks. Eventually they might turn into a cud. Thin die cracks are quite common. When they get this fat, they are quite uncommon. I've handled my share of 1864 and 1865 2c pieces and don't recall seeing one like this. Looks the coin was put in a vice multiple times or hammered on.

    Hello MVC,

Many of the diagnostics for Two Cent coins are

present on the obverse, therefor it is helpful if

you would include images of both sides.

By the way your images are very good.

The die cracks going through the "STATES OF"

appear on a number of die marriages & occur

at the top, middle & bottom letters.

The crack at O (F) I believe enters from the rim

and gradually gets larger & like Roadrunner stated

    probably turns into a cud.

If you go to CoinFacts and look at the 1864 large motto

section the first coin shown has cracks similar to your

coin, but at a different die stage. But you need the

obverse to peg the die marriage.

    Good luck.

There also appears to be some machine doubling on the 2...Cheers, RickO

Looks like the edge has seen many of a bar counter...the rim is beaten up pretty well.
