Full Year Coin Set

Any input if someone wanted to do a full year set of coins from cent, nickel, dime, etc up to the gold coins. I'm not talking about current year. Maybe something over 100 years old.

Would 1900 be a good year to do this?

What would be the best, but not most expensive, year to build?

Has anyone tried to do this?

Thanks,

Chris

I chose to do this set for the 100th year before my birth year, focusing on Carson City only.

    1798 would be awesome.

1921 is an important interesting choice. Lots of transitions. 1916 as well.

    1922 is easy. image

I've done 100 years prior to my birth year.

I like the 100 years before the birth year idea.

1921 would be a good set, unobtainable in mint state without very deep pockets unfortunately.

1907 would be a good year because of the transition from Liberty head to Indian/Saint Gaudens.

1908 if you want to get into motto/no motto gold as well as Liberty head $5 transitions to Indian.

I think 1900 would be a good year to assemble while not breaking the bank too much.

I've partially done this for my son.

Some are too expensive for the grades of what I would consider "good" for the coin, as I want the coin to have some meat and look good. Also, that year, there are a LOT of coins from the mints to get. So, I could do just "a" coin for the type/year, but I prefer to get ALL the coins. PITA

For reference, I am talking about the year 1902, for BY-100

I thought about doing mine, but being older, those get a bit pricey too image

Like all of the suggestions above, I've thought and partially accomplished the dates of my pre 100 year birthdate. 1864 is tough. I've started the year of my parents birth. Those are tough too. 1919 and 1931. As a history buff, I've thought of 1812 and CW. I went with CW in addition t my folks. CW tough. I got 40% through and realized I'd be 150 years old before I accomplished it in the grade I'd want. Pick a year significant to you, or a historic date and analyze the cost for an acceptable grade for you. Then begin. That is key or you'll find yourself half way through and realize the finances aren't possible. Or you'll finish your set and wish you wold have bought higher grade. Either way, get a red book, a calculator and a history book, pick a date and have great fun. The adage " Buy the book before the coin" is the best advise I'd ever give. Pick a date that fancies you, research it for the grades that fit your finances and have a ball. Greatest hobby ever!

They didn't make dimes, quarters, or half dollars in 1798 so it might feel like an incomplete set missing 3 hallmark denominations.

The year they made everything was 1796. Problem with that is the key dates from that year are some of the most sought after rarities in all of numismatics... Half cent mintage: 1300 (lowest mintage of any regular issue copper coin ever made by the US mint). Dime: 20000 (if memory serves me). Quarter: 6100. Half dollar: ~1000 (although this number is up to debate).

What about when WW2 finished and include all world coins as well as the US coins? Maybe not as exciting but perhaps more obtainable.
