1861 $2.50 New and Old

The 1861 quarter eagle was minted with two varieties: the Old Reverse (scarce) and the New Reverse (common). A modified reverse design (with smaller letters and arrowheads)was used on Philadelphia quarter Eagles from 1859 through 1907. A few Philadelphia Mint pieces were made in 1859, 1860 and 1861 using the Old Reverse design. With a mintage of 1,283,788 for both varieties there are an estimated 2000 survivors of the New Reverse and 100 survivors of the Old Reverse.
