Hey Greg (savoyspecial), ANYONE

This is on the reverse of a Standing Liberty quarter....

I see

sunrise, cross, harp?, some maybe Celtic symbols, etc.

Anyone have any ideas about the symbols or what this might represent, who may have made

it for what purpose??

Please share any thoughts...................

I sort of get the bottom portion, a scene of some sort. The top portion,.. engraver doodling?

Maybe an early Led Zeppelin cover?

Lower left harp, center lighthouse, lower right cross. Memorial to a sailor lost at sea?

    Sun setting?

Is the date on the quarter?
  • A very Irish theme. I would also be interested to know the date.

Just looks like it was carved by a Odd Fellow...

Not the fraternal origination type just a very peculiar Odd Fellow image

Shame it's modern and not period as SLQ's craved in their day are scarce.

Almost seems like no Hobo ever had a Quarter to his name? image

Obviously a Celtic theme, as stated, but I don't know how much more info we'll get out of that. I'd be interested to know if the knotwork at the top is specifically symbolic of something or if it's simply artistic flourishes.

I think AUandAG might be onto something with the "sailor" theme, though while this could indeed be a memorial to a sailor lost at sea, I think it's more likely a talisman to protect a living sailor so he would come home from the sea.

A Standing Liberty quarter host coin gives me a WW2 vibe. Maybe it protected some guy from the U-Boats. (If it hadn't, we wouldn't be seeing it- it would be in Davy Jones' locker.)

All rampant speculation, of course, but that's what's fun about pieces like this: they invite speculation and stimulate the imagination.
