USPS .......... again.

goldengolden Posts: 9,995 ✭✭✭✭✭
I won a coin in a Heritage auction. They mailed it registered at 10:49 AM on August 26. It reached the Memphis hub at 9:55 PM on August 28 where it sat for 8 days! It arrived at a different Memphis office on September 5 at 4:59 PM. It got to my P.O. on September 7 at 7:57 AM. I went to my P.O. Box at 11:10 am today. There was not a pink slip in the box. I told the clerk that the computer showed that it was at that office. She went and looked in the safe and it was not there. This is a big no,no. After 10 minutes of looking she found it laying around in the back of the office! It took 12 days to get to my P.O. Unbelievable! image

12 days is normal for registered mail, that is how long it takes. Leaving it out of the safe, that is another matter..........

Registered is slow, but worth it. Shouldn't have been laying around in the back though.

I think overall USPS does a good job considering all the mail they handle.

    But sometimes things go wrong...

I'm just glad they found it for you.

Haven't had anything go missing in a while from the usps; I sometimes push their end of day deadlines and hand parcels to clerks who swear they will be on the outgoing truck and they don't scan until late the next day in NY or NJ.

I'm with the "defend the USPS" crowd. Considering the volume they deal with, their success rate is impressive.

Does USPS have bad apples? Sure, bad apples are everywhere. USPS is notorious for dealing harshly with internal thieves.

My experience with registered mail is that delays and mishandling occur most often in the local, smaller, rural branches where they do not see a lot of registered mail.

Although I have read many USPS nightmare stories here, I have never had a problem... and I have lived all over the US....and had coins shipped from everywhere.... I am continually amazed at the issues raised here. Cheers, RickO

I have never had a coin lost nor stolen by USPS. Knock on wood. The only problem

I have ever had in 50 odd years of utilizing their services occurred when items came

through the Indianapolis terminal and sat there for 5 to 8 days. Must be awfully busy.

I would grade them A+ and truly appreciate their hard work. I know for those of us that

have lost coins through their service have a bad feeling for them and I understand that and

feel their pain. Still I think that the loss ratio to be very low considering the volume. It would

be interesting to know the origination and destination for each lost coin on this forum, perhaps

a trail might be established. JMO

I was a Postal Inspector. For every bad employee, or Inspector for that matter, there were hundreds of dedicated workers. Giving your carrier something for your appreciation is frowned upon. There are many many other employees who work hard who don't get the opportunity for handouts.

I've had success with Registered using Priority mail. Some say paying the
extra postage doesn't get you anything since they state Registered may take longer due to special handling but I've always had the delivery completed in 3 days.

I'll defend the USPS all day long. Their track record is nearly impeccable. I ship thousands of packages a year, and I struggle to think of one or two that may have been lost or damaged in the last decade and a half. I also ship a lot internationally, and the lost rate is much higher. Not only is the USPS excellent, but it is also far and away better than what the rest of the world has.

Too bad for them! I am going to keep giving my Man his year end gift. Great guy who always takes care of me.

Also, we all know Registered Mail is the post office solution for making sure their own employees do not steal our stuff. It's just the world we live in.

99%+ of the parcels have gotten delivered, the few that get delayed or get sent to recovery in Atlanta or God forbid get permanently chewed up, lost or stolen create unbelievable havoc. The systems exist to solve those less than 1% of problems, I wish they would have some real brainy people work on solving all the problems.

This is from the PO site. Not sure how that compares to any other delivery service?

During the reporting period from October 2014 through September 2015, OIG special agents conducted 1,607 internal mail theft investigations, resulting in 493 arrests, 1,220 administrative actions, and approximately $478,000 in monetary benefit for the Postal Service.

garrynot. Did your job usually involve investigating employees or scammers?
  • garrynotgarrynot Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭
I was involved with internal crimes, theft of mail and money, also theft of treasury checks by gang bangers, and some busts during deliveries of drugs to locations from outside the country.

    Thanks for asking,

Yes, it was very interesting. Worked with some talented Inspectors, FBI agents, Secret Service and DEA agents. Learned a lot.

It was a small value coin. Several years ago I won a piece of currency that was not expensive but was rare and would have been almost impossible to replace. It was shipped priority . I complained and they have shipped registered ever since then.

Disgusting story. I realize there is an overcrowding issue in prisons, but surely they can find some small spot for her? 40 hours of community service and a generous pay back plan based on the amount the SHE estimated she stole - ridiculous. Sure, take the word of a thief on how much money they took.

    And she littered!!
