    otherwise known as a 'sliced digit' - very very common occurrence



    The 0 was sliced from a counting or rolling machine.

    There might be an indication of what happened from the scratch that appears to come from the upper right, and head directly toward the date. Whatever machinery made the scratch appears to have bumped and moved the "0" of the date.

    That kind of damage occurs when the fingers that crimped the paper on a penny roll hit the coin. Not the type of wrappers that you fold over, but the kind that mechanically rolled the end of the wrapper inwards, allowing part of the end coin to be seen.

    When this affects the last digit in the date, it is much easier to spot, since it looks so different.
