Here's the PCGS grade. Looks like nobody guessed it! For the record, I agree with those who have said AU50. There is very little actual wear, although it has a bit of a mushy strike due to the die rust. There is original luster, but the reverse is more subdued than the obverse. I think even XF45 is too conservative with current standards.
So for the first time ever, I'm tempted to play the crackout game. However i'd rather just get a gold sticker on it and call it a day. Do you guys know if CAC accepts reconsideration requests?
I can't believe CAC didn't give that a gold sticker. I guess they don't like die rust or think that the black surfaces above Miss Lib's head could be early ED. PCGS must have netted it down for negative eye appeal/surfaces. If it were mine I'd not be happy with a 40 grade. Regardless, it's worth 45-50 money even on a bad day.
Nice 33. By the photo it looks pretty original. I would have guessed 53 netted to 50 if the surfaces do have something going on. Boy, was I off.
The lowere area by the date looks lighter, is it scuffy?
Persuing choice countermarked coinage on 2 reales.
Enjoyed numismatic conversations with Eric P. Newman, Dave Akers, Jules Reiver, David Davis, Russ Logan, John McCloskey, Kirk Gorman, W. David Perkins...
No scuffs at the date, hairlines or anything. The date area is not noticeably lighter in hand, I think it may have been the lighting in the image. I think that CAC would not have stickered it at all if there was evidence of messing, regardless of the details. I've seen them pass on a bunch of "netted" coins.
No hairlines anywhere actually, and I think it has an original look. the only thing I can really see that might have held it back is that the reverse is a bit darker than the obverse. There is still luster peeking through though.
It sure looks like it. My records are missing the cert number for the 1833 I used to have. Given the low CAC pops for 1833 in XF40...there's a good chance.
Lots of coins get netted down by the graders/finalizers for whatever reason. I was looking at a rare date $20 a few years ago graded AU50 that looked a lot better; was able to walk it over to a real expert at the major show and he gave me his opinion, that it might not straight grade next time around.
I guessed 40 without looking. I think it is well struck with just enough wear to justify the grade. The perimeter of the shield and the worn high points on the feathers are what brought me to that guess more than anything else.

When I don't agree with PCGS on the grade -- and I don't here, at least on the basis of the pix -- I simply resubmit it for regrading. More often than not the grade is bumped.
You'd lose the CAC sticker but can always get another. The regraded coin will have a different cert#.

I'd have said AU 50 shot at 53.

Now that you mention it, the date area does look possibly wiped. If that's the case it was likely netted down for that and other reasons.
Great coin nonetheless, certainly appears undergraded from the pictures.

I know who I sold it to in August
Thinking back, I don't think I've ever owned a CBQ above VF35.
Edit (after scrolling down to see the slab shot)- whoa. I am surprised.
No wonder that got a green bean. I'm semi-surprised it didn't get a gold one, with that PCGS grade.
Nice coin!

50 was my thought. Lack of lustre may have held it back though.
Agree.And eye appeal.
