I think perhaps this policy means that gift cards cannot be turned into other forms of money i.e. gift cards/ currency/ coins. For example, ebay would not want you to spend your $50 gifts card on a $50 bill: swapping for monetary value. I think COLLECTIBLE coins/ currency/ and bullion are likely is exempt. I may be wrong, just my 2 cents worth.

I'm pretty sure this is what is meant. They are not allowing you to trade it out for face value of currency or coin. I'm certain that collectable coins and currency are still perfectly fine. Of course, it is eBay....

That's the way I see it too. But I wouldn't be surprised if collectible coins fell into a catch-all.
I am pretty sure that is new. IMO, they are specifically exempting those items just as they say. Otherwise, why would they mention bullion, and in multiple forms? And I will verify that I have used the gift cards in the past to buy bullion. I have also used them to buy another ebay gift card, and there did not use to be that restriction.
No more ebay gift cards for me unless I hear further clarification or rewording of the terms.
I used a gift card and bought another gift card and it did not have the advertised value. Seller: yes it did. Paypal dispute.
I ran into something similar on a rebate gift card, VERY short expiration, not good for LOTS of stuff, etc. It was for $250. But it was good on groceries, and the grocery store stocks gift cards, including AMEX cash cards with no expiration. I grabbed a bunch of those, (5 x $50 ) and some milk and bread, and the rebate card was accepted, and paid the balance in cash, and I had successfully "laundered" the rebate card.

The item I tried to pay for was in this category:
Coins & Paper Money > Coins: US > Quarters > Washington (1932-98)
Originally posted by: jwitten So you tried to use a gift card and it did not accept it or what?
Correct. It said the item I was buying was not eligible to be paid for using a gift card. I double checked and there was a balance so I dug further and found the coin restriction.
Contact the seller to relist it in an "approved" category, with a title like "private auction for Tommy Tent Peg" and spell out what the item is in a separate email.
We have a similar problem in the automotive parts side in that some categories, for example, Fenders, are not eligible for overseas shipment, but the bracket that holds on the fender, which should be listed in the fender section, can be shipped with no problem.
We just relist it for the overseas people in a neutral category.
The coins restriction is new...when they changed the wording recently it was targeted at bullion primarily. They added in coins recently (within the past month or so). They also changed the rules on $$ value of ebay gift cards you can redeem in a 2 month period about a month ago.
Its pure bs.
In fact, they just amended this on 8/22. They added coupons, coins, paper money, virtual currency. The previous amendment from July did not contain those restrictions.
I know, I almost got tagged out of redeeming several thousand dollars in gift cards but got them redeemed with qualifying ebay buckage before the $2000 cap took effect.
What is strange find a coin you would like to buy or any coin on ebay then go to ask the seller a question click pay for item question. On the drop down list it shows you can use ebay gift cards on all the coins I look at which was 10 even on bullion try it.

Strange if you go on any coin or bullion and click ask seller a question hit pay for item it says gift cards can be used I guess a bait and switch.

I don't believe it is a bait and switch. I don't think sellers knew about this... It has been 2 weeks.
I am somewhat miffed, that I have been left holding the bag of gift cards that I had no other use for. I just wonder if EBAY is going to change.
I'd be somewhat miffed also. I don't currently have any ebay gift cards, but still bothers me. A gift card is a gift card... the money has been paid... why in the world are they putting such restrictions on it?
I would certainly try to use the gift card with a seller that posts that they are acceptable... but as mentioned, I doubt they will work. This appears to have been a change that caught quite a few unprepared for it.

I tried to use gift card on a coin that the seller accepted them. It did not accept it.
They could have stated effective Oct 1, or something like that. I don't recall any Fed . laws that prohibit buying coins with gift cards.

Did ebay change their policy on this recently? I'm pretty sure I've used ebay gift cards to buy coins before, but now they are on the restricted list.
I can tell you I've used ebay cards to pay for coins before. This must be new. What a disappointment.
This is unfortunate news. Everybody call eBay!
What's their number?

It doesn't apply to collector coins.

That's the only reason that I ever liked or used them was for coins!!
I'll have to tell people that I no longer want them as gifts.
Very disappointing.....
Thanks for the heads up.

Don't know what I am going to do to them, since I used them to purchase coins?
Had a couple of coins I was thinking of purchasing, but I will no longer be able to.
I do hope they reconsider, otherwise I can no longer be a customer on EBAY.
Everything is all right!
