Toning. NT or AT

Bought this set on the bay. All coins had some toning. The silvers are beautifully rainbow toned. Even the clads had toned. Question is.... Does this warrant Questionable toning ? Or do you feel otherwise ? I wish the image was better. Thank you

Based on that pic, I would guess that someone made them and stuck them in that holder.

I wish the pic was better too!

Dirty velvet + time is a good toner. Unfortunately, even if it were 100% genuine toning, once it gets to a TPGS, it is up to them to decide. decases ago, a famous numismatist found that a coin in his safety deposit box became beautifully toned over a long period. The TPGS rejected it as artificial! He was hot and wrote a letter to the editor about his experience.

Closer pictures of the silver coins would help of course, but it would appear to me to be natural toning imparted by a method normally used for the storage of coins.

Thank You's to all that replied. I had four of them sent in and they all came out as Questionable toning. I'm thinking about having them resubmitted to see if they would straight grade. At this point I doubt its worth the time and money. It hurts me in two ways, they don't agree with me so, no straight grades. Then monetarily. UGH- Ouch. It was very apparent to me that the felt fibers had caused this toning over time. The fibers could be seen on the surface of the coins. I had called in to discuss this and was told that questionable color and Artificial toning fell under the same category (91) to our hosts. I had thought they would be separate. I wonder what are my chances to get them straight grades ? 50/50 or lower ?

I think lower than 50/50, particularly if you're submitting them as a group and not individually.



While they may indeed be NT they do not look naturally toned, IMO.

I am finding that toning on Kennedy halves has a hard time realizing a premumin when selling even if it got toned while in a slab.

They don't look NT to me. But can you post up some clearer picture of the toned ones. That may help out with everyone's opinions on your raw toners.

Really not possible to tell from those pictures... heck, well done AT will fool most people, even experts...that is why we see AT coins in slabs... and that is also why NT coins get rejected. Cheers, RickO

Clads can get some pretty amazing natural toning.... but these look just too wild to be above suspicion.

To me they look like what TPG'er call AT.

But I was at a shop when 1 that looked just like this came in from an old guy that had nothing graded and hated the color on the coins. He said he bought they and they were white a long time ago.

Using the definition of NT arising from how a collector stores their coins, I would say these are NT.
They have been stored in this holder, which was designed to hold these Kennedy's.

They might very well be natural, but no matter what, they have to stand up on their own merits, outside of any Holder and away from any Story. Similarly many many (many) artificially toned coins get certified as market acceptable.

I too, would like to see better pictures of a couple of your favorite coins among the group

It is hard to tell from the photos, but the coins do not look original to me.

Had they been part of Newman they'd have graded NT. But, without such a provenance, QT is the expected result.

Hard to really tell from the pictures but some of the toned ones look like I have seen in special holders where, when looked at closely, they have been cleaned/dipped and retoned in the after market holder.

I got bit by some low cost (luckily) ones that were done that way when I was first (re-)starting out. ~$10 loss because it was only 3 or 4 of them, but when I learned more, and I looked closer, it was very evident.

Since then, I continue to see these types of things sold at local B&Ms and at coin shows (always by the same types of dealers)

They don't look NT from the picture. In hand, maybe different, but doubtful.
