I've acquired a few fakes from Dave too - not sure he wants that reputation!

I confess, I would pass right by that one. I'll let someone else clue me in.
No 1930-D coins were struck, so there's the giveaway.
(But I had to look that up to be sure I remembered correctly.)
I remembered there being a footnote in the Redbook, but not about which date/mint(s) it referenced. And I sent my copy of the Redbook off to my young twin nephews today, so I'm Redbook-less for the moment.
You are right I have never seen one before. Thanks for sharing the photos. I have been looking for many years for one. Almost looks genuine. the 1923-D looks more fake with the washed out reverse. Very cool coins. Sometimes the fakes are worth more than the real ones-even if there are no real ones.
I have a fake Morgan... and I was aware of these dimes... and although not avidly searching for them, I do look at old albums and rolls of Mercs hoping to find one...Cheers, RickO

Contemporary counterfeit?
Congrats on locating this rare counterfeit. I remember you were saying you'd been looking for one for years, and here it is. What a neat fake!

Do you have a 23D as well????
I was intrigued by the footnote in the Redbook and always wanted to acquire one of each.
Both have been confirmed by David Lange, author of The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes. Here is the 1923-D:

First I heard of the Soviets counterfeiting our coinage.
State funded deception or private entrepreneurs ?
Although I have a very acceptable set of Mercs in an
old Whitman Bookshelf album, ( VF-MS ) I have not
purchased the Lange book, yet.
As a young teenager, I had heard of the 23-D & 20-D's
we're fake. I've never seen one in hand though.
