Looking like this will be my first one since late 80's (?? San Francisco). Thought I went to one in Northern California around then, not sure.
Enjoyed reading the recaps and viewing the photos from the AC attendees this year.
Hoping to meet some of you and share stories of this amazing hobby. Will probably have my 12 year old son with me; or maybe the whole family if the girls can shop.

Hopefully this can be the official thread for meeting up, travel plans etc for next years National?
I look forward to finally meeting everyone that I've built relationships with on these boards over the years.

.so where is the national held?...near michigan avenue (for those who don't like cards can shop...ugh more money)?.. or near one of the airports?
..what will be the nearest hotel? might as well think of some logistics.....thanks guys.
Looking forward to it.
Last year in Chicago was a real treat. Met a lot of CU guys and also enjoyed my time at the PSA Luncheon with many of you.
cpamike was my tour guide last year and I'm eternally grateful for that.
I plan to have some stuff wrapped by BBCEx too.
See you guys there.
hmmm....I have family there so may be doable with others that aren't into the hobby.....

The show is in rosemont at the Stephens convention center near o'hare airport. There are several hotels within a close distance including a Hyatt attached to the convention center. There is also a mall across the street and a casino about 1 mile down the road. It's a great venue and always enjoyable.
Appreciate today-

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

When I would go to the Chicago Comic-Con I would always stay at the Courtyard O'Hare. Great hotel, free shuttle and they really took care of me and my friends.
I am thinking about going to the National this year

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I can already smell the Doubletree cookies!!
KC
Hilarious!!!!!!
I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball
.
I booked a room at the Doubletree last month, and will be there.

Incorrect. A leap year is either divisible by 4 and not 100 or divisible by 4 and 100 and 400.
I'm going to find out the price of booking a room. I already have a free flight in bonus miles and my family lives in the area to pick me up. Woohoo!
.
Also, US presidential election years are always leap years.
Steve
Wow a lot of the hotels are out of discounted rates already. I mis the boat on this every year. Booking Crowne Plaza now.

Looking at the convention schedule just posted, doesn't make any sense to be there until thursday AM? Anyone's thoughts here? Also considering leaving town on Saturday night, the 29th. Not clear if the Wednesday or the Sunday are worth attending? Thanks in advance

I'm already booked arriving tue and out after the show Friday. Look forward to seeing lots of old friends and making new ones.
Know a great all-you-can-eat sushi place in Bloomingdale if a group is interested in having a dinner one night.

Sunday generally is not worth staying for. Dealers and many attendees that have been there all week are tired and ready to get on the road. Any "deals" have been found and sold by then.
The earlier you get into the show the better. Try to befriend a dealer to get a dealer badge and be there during setup all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning. That is where the action is and most of the good cards, wholesale deals, etc transact.
If you get there Thursday morning dealers, buyers getting dealer badges, etc have walked the room many times buying what they feel are the best deals and millions of dollars have changed hands before you walk into the room.
Sounds like the game plan of a veteran of many rodeos there my friends! p
Maybe one day for me. Is there any kind of '70s hockey available or is it mostly The Big 3 and modern?

You mean there's more than one?!?!?!?!
Most election years do fall on a leap year, however...
Oddly enough, though an election occurs every four years, not every election year falls on a leap year. The reason is due to the Gregorian Calendar, which dictates that years marking the end of a century (ie: multiples of 100) are only leap years if also divisible by 400. As a result, 1600, 2000, & 2400 are leap years, but 1800, 1900, & 2100 are not.
Good lord what have you nerds unearthed lol
Any concerns on safety at this years National? I have never been to Chicago but the murder rate does have me a little concerned.

I was writing a computer program to calculate the number of days a person had been alive (exactly), so I needed to know how leap year works. It's funny because I spent a ton of time figuring it out only to determine later it was a built in function of the language - so all of my work and coding turned into just one line.
As for staying alive in Chicago, don't go to the south side of Chicago which is typically considered the dangerous part of the city. Also, most of the murders are gang related so if you're not in a gang that greatly reduces your chances.
Honestly be careful in the city. A lot and I mean a lot of crack heads that are very aggressive. My wife and I went in 2013 and ventured into the city and it was scary by the river walk area. Rosemont is a suburb and feels very safe.
As Dpeck100 notes, there are squirrelly types in the city. But they're easily avoided -- however I live here so I might be jaded or used to it. Throw me into any other major metropolis and I wouldn't necc. know a good block from a bad one.
That said, Rosemont is a suburb of Chicago, and I would call it from very to extremely safe. Going in and out of a known collectibles show, though, you should always practice situational awareness. Your concern in Rosemont isn't random violence at all (no more than anyplace) so much as it is, be watchful for people eager to relieve you of your stuff without your knowing it. Be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine.
No issues as far as safety and been there numerous times with the family. Rosemont is a great suburb so you will be fine.
KC
I stayed in Rosemont and visited Chitown last fall during the World Series. The City was a blast as were the train rides and walking for miles around downtown. Never a problem, people were great. Lots of interesting folks on Michigan Ave., sometimes they talk to you, or sing, or preach. No murders to report during the stay. Had thoughts of attending the upcoming National, but now my daughter is begging to go to Lollapalooza in Grant Park the following week. Decisions, decisions. Sigh.

Guys, thanks for the info about security in Chicago. I was concerned because if I do go I will be looking to buy a PSA 8 Jim Brown rookie and that would easily be the most expensive card in my collection.

Looking forward to the National this year. Did not go last year.
I hope to see you all there - will check out who's hanging out at BBCEx booth.
That means you Mike (cpa).
Should you find one, ask the dealer if you can leave it with until you're ready to leave for home. Less chance for you to lose or misplace it that way. Good luck finding one!
I think the quote button on mobile goes a wee bit overboard.
.
Morning!! Booked flight and room yesterday. Arriving Tuesday --leave Sunday. With fiancée so not all days will be spent chasing cardboard. On the sneak peak--very worth it if you're looking for tough to find stuff. Never had dealer badge--but sure is a good way to best regular traffic
See ya all soon. I'll start a thread end of June for specific meets etc. usually meet at BBCE booth on Thrs afternoon
