Jordan auto graded no authentic.........what to do.....

  • I am not an autograph expert by any means, but I do collect autographs, especially Jordan, and have read a bit on the subject.

When it comes to autographs, I look at the autograph itself on a confidence spectrum - 0 being 100% absolutely fake and 10 being 100% absolutely genuine. Anything below a 6 probably wouldn't be safe to sell online as you would get called out. If you have a 7 or 8, you may be able to sell it online, with no COA, and not have an issue unless the buyer submits it to be graded. In my mind, from a 3rd party graders point of view who didn't see the autograph in person, you can never get a perfect 10. Unless they see the autograph done in person, they can never be certain. You can approach close to a 10 with additional information, such as a COA from Upper Deck, etc. At the end of the day, the company's reputation is on the line and IMHO, they are looking more for reasons an item is not real, as opposed to looking why something is real. So with that approach, PSA would need to be in the 8-10 range on the spectrum before they consider authentication and put their name on it.

Now for the MJ in question, the big thing that jumps out to me is the upper curve on the "J" and the portion after the "J". Again, on a spectrum of 0-10, combined with the comment on the "M" above, you are looking at a 6 to 6.5 quality autograph. Most people not knowledgeable on autographs would look at that MJ and think, "Yeah, that looks pretty good. Real to me." IMHO, a professional authenticator would not have that opinion.

Or I can be totally FUBAR and if so, disregard. Good luck with whatever comes of the situation.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I was reading this thread and was wondering what the experts think of this Jordan auto.

Since I sign my name 8 different ways, I have no idea how they authenticate this stuff?

OP did you go back and talk to the person who sold this to you yet?

Seems if Jordan never signed at The Nationals but the person who sold this to you said that is how he got it you should call him out on his lie.

MJ Autograph on that card is not authentic.

The MJ on the Bulls signed sheet earlier in the thread is not authentic, neither is the Pippen.

Jordan never signed at the National. I'm pretty sure that one public appearance was very early in his career (1st or 2nd year), he's not done any others public signing events.

The only places to get him to sign were:
    1) In person, which was very very difficult after 1991-2 and by about 1996-7 basically impossible. While the players would sometimes stop after practice and sign from their cars, MJ stopped doing this pretty early in his career as well.
    2) Lake Tahoe at his golf tournament, for several years he would sign the line after his round. This was probably the easiest way to get him for a number of years.
    3) They used to have an annual Charitabulls dinner, you could get him there but it was also pretty difficult.
    4) Through his summer Camps, as attendees got 1 signed item each which is how the Spalding basketballs started appearing on the market (his UDA deal only had him signing Wilson balls
    5) Via Upper Deck send in program, which is now stopped. I think it started around 2009 or so (?), I got one item signed through it - it was pretty expensive, like $700-800 per signature if I recall.
