Contemporary counterfeit fans?

When this denomination was issued, the coins contained a face value that was greater than the value of the actual tin metal content it contained. As is commonly the case in such a situation, counterfeiting quickly ensued. This caused the denomination to be withdrawn from circulation, leaving this coin as a one year type.

Tin, huh? Not a metal I'd think of as a target for profiteers and counterfeiters. The few tin coins I've seen often have rather unpleasant surface issues. That doesn't look bad at all. I daresay it has a rather nice patina to it.

It's remarkably well preserved. I would venture a guess it was made late in the game, too late to be useful when the whole barn was burned down. Tin coins were popular in that region during that time. And as you alluded to, they generally did not fare well with the hot and humid climate. This one does have some of the white spotting, but not all that much compared to most.
