I'm thinking most likely details grade, either vf30 or xf40.

Your thoughts would be a help.

UPDATE: Sept. 26th....NGC VF35

Just miss EF IMO but may come back as cleaned. Nice coin though.

My WAG? Just on the cusp of 40. I could see that outcome.

    35 at least, surely.

Details vs straight grade? Hmm. That's harder for me. Dunno. It could pass, I guess?

I can see why you'd be uncertain, though.

I'll go optimistic and say 40, straight grade.

Not a bad coin, could be has high as 35-40, possibly even 45. The obverse nicks are what concern me.

I have seen nicks like those on the obverse in straight graded holders. My first impression, VF35.

    +1
Unless there are hairlines there, to me it gets a straight grade.

I'd be more concerned about the Clorox look. Certainly 35/40ish details. Traces of luster in the protected areas. And certainly worth submitting as the coin probably goes up 50-100% in a graded slab.

It should straight grade at 35.... Cheers, RickO

VF 30 by current standards, possibly cleaned long ago. I would not accept it as Xf even if it were in a holder with that grade attached.

I think it would straight grade at 30

VF 30, but I do not think it will straight grade because of the two deep nicks on the obverse.

You know this is a better date worth $1,000 in righteous plastic. Because of that I think it will get net graded into a problem-free holder as a 30. The detail is closer to 40.

This one got into a PCGS VF30 holder (check the reverse too). http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated...JumpToLot=1x=0&y=0

After checking the one posted in the link, I would take the OP's coin over that one if it were in the same plastic. So I think 35 would be the most likely outcome of your submission.

I don't think the nicks on the obverse will keep it from a straight grade.

That slabbed 1856-s VF30 has 4 major cuts/scratches in addition to being pretty well scrubbed. I'm surprised that got graded. I wouldn't want to pay more than Fine 15/VF20 money for such a specimen. My raw XF40/45 1858-s had none of those issues, was only lightly cleaned, had 5% luster left, had a pleasing appearance, and didn't even get into a net VF30/35 holder. I sold that one raw for $2,000 which was approx VF30/35 money.

I'm not surprised it made it into an NGC 35 holder; good job by the OP. I do not think that it would get a CAC sticker, though, due to the nick in the obverse field. I am presently looking for an 1856-S in original/choice VF30 to AU50 for my set, but like many collectors, I am looking for a CAC-able coin without major distractions.

Congrats on the grade. I just got this one back from our hosts. Bought here on the BST raw. Thought it might go details for what looks like a small staple scratch on the obverse field or environmental issue, but the sniffer and the graders blessed it. Thought if it did grade it would 35, but no dice.

Dang...that PCCG VF30 is a bad call IMO...must be the "newbies".

The OP coin looks like it has a MPD in the denticles under the "5"

    I agree.

I think bigjpst's vf30 is slightly better than mine and should have graded an ef40.

Do you want to trade 1856-s's? (lol)

I figured it for a 35 in hand with a very long shot at 40, but I think it's possible that the 30 is a net grade. The toning is a bit distracting, but it was under secure plus so the sniffer gave it the OK. Was thinking of sending it to CAC, but haven't decided yet.

I like the even color of yours a bit better, but think I'll pass on the trade.image

    Yea, I can't blame you.

Regardless of what grade 'number' we have, yours is the better coin, no doubt.

I'd say different but equal. Your coin is very nice and original. Both have some issues that get a pass because of the date. I'd be just as happy with yours if it weren't for the more liquid slab.
