LarkinCollector and all those who are pro sniping services I am definitely going to look into signing up for one. I came looking for input, advice, curiosity about peoples opinions and to express my own feelings as well and to ferret out Ebays official policy which Esquiresports was kind enough to share that there is some flexibility. Anyone who has tried more than one sniping service and feels one is hands down much better than others I am all ears.

"They're being divided because they are two distinct situations on eBay:

-auction is over and someone retracts "refusing to pay" - simply don't respond or decline 2nd chance offer, no possible negative impact

-auction is in process and someone pulls their bid - you have to retract your bid w/potential negative implications or talk to eBay (I know I have better things to do than spend hours on the phone with their customer service & legal team)"

I understand from a mechanistic point of view they are different but the concept and principle is identical. Someone could retract their bid one second before auction close and you become the winner or they wait one second longer, auction closes and then they refuse to pay. And all of s sudden underbidder is voluntary. ONE SECOND difference in theory and the events are being treated differently and some people seem to support one and not the other. Just perplexes me.

I use Myibidder, though Gixen and Gavelsnipe seem to be the most common responses here. I can't explain eBay's thought process on the mechanics, but have accepted them for what they are and moved on. Timing would have to be impeccable to squeeze a retraction in between my bid and the auction end and regardless, I either win at or less than my snipe or lose and move on to the next item.

I can understand the frustration of Mr. Wings, particularly being exposed to loopholes which do ultimately create potential conflicts. It is not my intention to defend any party in any way. I see the point being made and support the notion that cheaters should be identified and punished accordingly.

The basis for my argument in this thread pretty much boils down to one simple fact: THIS is the Ebay policy.

"A bid on eBay is considered a contract, and you're obligated to purchase the item."

If circumstances mandate that you were the winning bidder, no matter how you got there, it is the policy of the site that you pay.

There are remedies offered in their references to such a policy as to how the results can be changed or cancelled.

I absolutely agree that because of manipulative tactics being used by certain parties, the rules are, to paraphrase one of my Fan Club members: "garbage".

"A bid on eBay is considered a contract, and you're obligated to purchase the item."

There's probably some radical buying group doing a literal translation of that single line. They "bid" $1 on a $1000 card and demand to be sold the card for $1 because Ebay said they were obligated to purchase the item.

I wouldnt feel the slightest bit bad about cancelling my bid after i had been outbid and that bid retracted. Majority of bid retractions are shills anyways. First shiller finds your max and retracts. The second bids you up to that amount.

I think that "quote" isn't exact but his own translation of ebays policy. Close but missing an important word. "Winning" should be the second word in that sentence. And the second bid is NOT the winning bid. This has happened with AH's where they call the second place bidder if he would like to buy it but is NOT under any obligation because his bid did not win. PERIOD.
Othewise shillers could keep bidding you up once you're locked in with a bid. Then keep bidding until you stop, then retract. Locking you in to your most recent shilled bid.

I often find myself sleepless in bed worrying that someone may retract a bid in an auction in the few seconds after my snipe is placed resulting in me paying what I was willing to pay, or less, for a card. Then I think, lots of luck with that strategy.

They say it's against freeway policy, but people still do it anyways.

Too much BS on ebay allowing bid retractions. There should be a running total of retractions for a particular bidder and once it reaches a certain number, BAM, the account is gone.

Once I am outbid on something, I am no longer thinking I am going to win an item. In my opinion, the underbidder is now NOT obligated to win. Just this past week, I had a douchebag shill his own auction then a few days later, offer me a "second chance" to buy the item. I told him I wasnt interested unless I would get it at the amount I would have won it by had the non paying bidder not bid, which I think is fair, he declined the offer then relisted it again and shilled it up again.

Shilling and bid retractions are a cancer to ebay and should not penalize the honest bidders. Yeah, it sux if you have an idiot retract a bid if you are a seller, but if ebay would put restrictions in place to prevent it, there wouldnt be such a huge issue on it. I mean really, how many buttons and numbers do you have to hit before you place a bid.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
