1693 French - Indian Peace Medal

image

Bronze. 76 mm. By H. Roussel. This is an example of the earliest medal produced by any European nation to present to North American Indians to honor or otherwise influence their actions or allegiances. As this has no evidence of a hanger it was unlikely a presented example. Still, as a very early strike it is a very rare medal. Estimated four known.

Any other colonial IPM's members wish to share?

Wow. That's nice. Four known? Awesome.

Who are the figures on the reverse? I can't quite make out the inscriptions.

Looks outstanding! At some point you will need to post all of your IPM's together in one thread.

    Very nice!

Is there a standard reference for these?

Well, the young fellow at 9:00 is Louis, Duke of Burgundy. At 6:00, someone named Charles. Can't rightly make out the rest.

Iosephus, unfortunately for me, there is not a standard reference for colonial Indian Peace Medals. I am slowly gathering info to create a timeline of IPMs. It would not, nor ever be a comprehensive reference for IPMs. There are several fantastic papers on the individual colonial medals that I would be happy to refer you to. The knowledge and educational value of their writings far exceed mine. John Adams , Barry Tayman, Tony Lopez, Skyler Liechty, these are the guys that deserve 100%! of the credit in discovering and writing about this amazing part of United States history. And it is the very essence of US history. So fascinating. I truly wish other collectors would realize and appreciate Indian Peace Medals, and other Betts medals, as a piece of history. IPMs are, for the most part, are expensive. But other Bett's medals are very scarce yet inexpensive.

Your example was catalogued by Joseph LeRoux in 1892 as #300 with a rarity 5 rating. Here's a link to a photo of the 1983 reprint edition:

Forgot to add that there are 8 French issues in the catalogue. Someone may be able to research the British Historical Medals catalogues for British issues.

Ah shoot, Boosi. You always get me going. This is a kick ass medal. New to my collection.
1764 Spanish IPM. I'll guess not three people on collectors forum know this exists.

Let's jump to 1794. George III. "Simcoe Medal". In 1793 Lt. Governor of Upper Canada John Simcoe ordered medals for Native Americans. . Instead, he received these. Exceptionally rare. image

I'm so bad at this. Let's jump 30+ years. Federal John Quincy Adams IPM. Usually several sizes. This, the third size ( i.e. 51mm ). No modern auction comparisons. Really, really rare. Not to be confused with exceptionally rare.

I'm aware of some writings in the MCA Advisory (and Adams's book on those of George III, which I admittedly do not own). I don't currently collect IPMs, but have a general interest in medals, with French medals of this period (late 17th century) falling within my collecting realm. Please refer me to any other articles! Thanks!

I really like the design on that George III Simcoe medal.

Iosephus, I still owe you a response.

LM, great design. I'll also send info on the Simcoe medal. As with so many of these medals, I didn't know about this medal until offered it, and then researched.
