New Pick 1901-S Morgan Dollar

jtlee321jtlee321 Posts: 2,355 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hey all. I just picked up a few Morgan's today. I paid $25.00 each and this was one of them. A 1901-S that to me looks high XF or AU. Would you agree? I seems to have luster all over with a few areas that are weak especially in the high points.

    I'll go with a nice 55.

It looks wire brush cleaned and/or damaged on the obverse. A plain old white light straight on shot would tell the whole story. If it's not, AU-53 and why is it in the junk bin if it's problem free would be the thought going through my head, if I was ever to dig through one of those.

All that aside, I hope it is problem free and if so, you done good.

I use 2-3 white lights for my photography set up along with a custom white balance. Here is a single light washed across the obverse.

I really don't think it's been damaged by a wire brush, I think it's just been handled and circulated and thrown into bags. Also, I did not say it was in a "junk bin" it was in a velvet tray along with other AU/BU common date Morgan's. My thought as to why it was in that tray is that it's a weaker strike and was really grungy, so he thought it was probably a much lower grade then what is really was. He is also not a coin specialist, but focuses on bullion.

Certainly AU. At least a 53.

I am leaning towards details graded here, but otherwise AU53-55 as others have said.

Velvet tray? Oh, well that's different. LOL. $25 Morgans are all junk status, but especially rare dates, even in the velvet tray.

Zero chance that coin grades OK after seeing the new image. Did you weigh it and do the fake tests by chance?

Even if it does not grade cleanly, it's still a decent buy. I'm happy either way.

And Wabbit.. It's real. Thanks, but I'm not a newb..

I'm just a guy who does not have a ton of money and I like to hunt for good deals and gems in the rough. I'm not an expert in Numismatics, but my knowledge is not at the beginning level either. I enjoy trying to get nice picks and taking photo's of coins. I try to sell the cherrypicks to use the profits to add coins to my personal collection, so that one day I can pass them down to my kids. I've had a few home runs and only a couple of strikeouts but my average is pretty decent. I don't pretend to know everything I just play the game the best I can.

Should come back cleaned (even though it is rather minor) due to Liberty's face and field in front of face. The well defined halos around the stars in this area are a give away. Still a very nice pickup for $25 though =)

If it grades, it would net out around AU50 I'd guess.

Reverse is a 58. Probably sat obverse down in a wooden box.

    Straight grade 55.

I'm in RIP City Baby!! Well on the north side of the Columbia anyway's.. LOL

Nice Lance! I have 10 coins that I just sent off to Great Collections who just sent them into PCGS for me. A handful of varieties that have had decent auction histories. I hope to get the grades I'm expecting, but I'm not holding my breath. They are going in under the Economy Tier so grading and attribution is only $24.00 per coin, not too bad.

    Here's what is going in:

    1911-S Lincoln Cent FS-501 I'm thinking XF40 BN
1965 SMS Lincoln Cent Hoping for MS65 RD CAM
1943-P Jefferson Nickel FS-102 DDO Hoping for MS65/66 FS (Current PCGS POP reports only have 2 non FS graded and 0 FS)
1965 Roosevelt Dime Business strike that is flawless I could absolutely see it at MS-67 FB
1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter FS-501 Inverted S I can't remember the grade, but I think in the VF range.
1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter FS-501 Inverted S again I don't remember what my grade guess was but probably in the F range.
    1941-S Washington Quarter FS-503 Large S I can see it getting MS64 maybe 65
    1964-D Kennedy Half FS-104 DDO I was thinking MS64
    1968-D Kennedy Half FS-101 TDO I'm thinking MS64
    1968-D Kennedy Half FS-101 TDO probably MS63

I was questioning the CAM designation on the '65 Lincoln Cent, I spoke with Ian on the phone and he thought it would be worth sending in to see.

I was shocked to actually get to talk to him, he was really nice and we briefly spoke about the 1919 DDO Mercury Dime they sold back in Feb. I told him I was the one who originally found it at a local show and had it graded with ANACS originally before it crossed over to PCGS as the finest known straight graded specimen. He then told me he would let me know what my coins graded when they came back.

The 68-D TDO half dollar is a good one. I had a 62 and 63 go supernova at GC a few months ago. Good luck.

Those were yours huh? I was shocked at the hammer prices on them. I actually cherrypicked 4 of those out of a big pile of 40% that one of my local shops had. They must have had someone come in that had been hoarding them for a while. I sent the 2 best conditioned in to GC.

My coins finally came back from PCGS to GC. I was pretty close on almost all of them.

    1911-S Lincoln Cent FS-501 PCGS XF-40 BN
1965 SMS Lincoln Cent PCGS SP66 RD no CAM though. (Both Ian and I were on the fence about the CAM designation, oh well)
1943-P Jefferson Nickel PCGS MS-65 FS (They did not attribute it, it will go back as it's a new listing DDO FS-102. When I can get the attribution is will be a Top POP)
1965 Roosevelt Dime PCGS SMS SP-67 (They gave it a SMS designation, I disagree as the die markers match exactly on examples of BS on Coin Facts but I was correct on the grade)
1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter FS-501 Inverted MM PCGS F-15 (I'm horrible at grading SLQ's)
1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter FS-501 Inverted MM PCGS VG-08
1941-S Washington Quarter FS-503 Large S PCGS MS-65 (Was excited to get the 65 as I was expecting a 64)
1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO FS-104 PCGS MS-62 (A bit lower than expected)
1968-D Kennedy Half Dollar TDO FS-101 PCGS MS-65 (I'm thrilled with this one!! Now if I can get them to go crazy like BustHalfBrian's examples did..)
1968-D Kennedy Half Dollar TDO FS-101 PCGS MS-62 (A grade lower than I thought, but still happy they attributed it correctly.)

Hey j. She looks market acceptable. Nice 01s for the price. Your pics can be somewhat deceiving to grade accurately but from what I can see she's a solid 53 with a possible 55. Luster is there and enough detail, it's the amount of hits and scuffs I'm the fields and focal areas that could be hiding preventing me from giving a definate number. I'm a touch on the conservative side as you know so worth the given into I'll err on the 53 side
    The more you VAM..

Thanks Chris. I revived this older thread for the wrong reason, it was to post the grades on a submission that I sent to GC. The 1901-S has gone on to a new owner and I made enough profit to be very happy with it. image

Argh. I usually notice old threads but it was late and I just finished up going through a $150k proof walker & high grade Morgan CC collection including an 89 in 62 dmpl. I was a little coin drunk lol. Good job on the flip image
