Yup. CU is about 10% of what it was 3 years ago.

I've been here for over 12 yrs.

I've tried to bring my personal knowledge and sometimes humor to our forum.

I've run auctions on behalf of some of our members here and will do so in the future.

I don't know who you are.

Since I rarely get involved, I wouldn't know an "ALT" if it bit me in the ass.

CU has always been a fountain of knowledge, a river of humanity and an ocean of interesting and informative threads.

    If you're bored?

    Write a thread on something.

If people were interested? I can put out a thread on some of the "historical" ephemera I've picked up in the last year or two - my latest was a letter written by Clark Griffith - the President of the Washington Nationals to William Harridge - the President of the American League in 1950.

So, my advice on "getting bored?" Write a thread that will get even one person excited about something.

I'll be the first to read. image

The thread you started yesterday Mike was bad ass, and figured that would be a "3 pager" by now. Instead of that though, there seems to be a huge emphasis on talking about investments and whether or not Ichiro slaps singles to left field. That gets tedious if you ask me. I want to talk cards...why guys collect the sets they do, I want to learn facts and tidbits about sets. There never is enough to learn that's for sure...

That's the way it goes in the "thread business" James.

If ya look at the last decade?

    Cycles.

I know what you mean tho. I've got many threads written and don't post since there's very little interest right now.

I've got all the time and patience in the world - one day I'll come on board and we'll be "lit up" again with activity.

I remember when JoeStalin was here and Heritage was raised to an art form.

We just need some variety in threads I guess?

  • We're all truced up Dan. thanks my friend. image I can mock your SICK stuff all I want image No one has to like it but I hate it ! heh !!

Stone, you old pro you image A big deal is people either taking offense because something is posted cooler than they can be, or jealousy because they didn't do it in the first place.

I have absolute ZERO issues with someone, who could, well, set afloat 999 1989 Donruss Canseco cards face up in a pool (of all things), and then set them on fire and film it image

What could be offensive on that to anyone ? (but ...)

This board needs a HUGE group rip of stuff that all will actually OPEN !

I think the "update" of the website caused some people to stop visiting. Also the board went on an extended "unopened" kick, with almost nothing else being discussed, turning the site into one big BBCE advertisement. Things seem more back to normal now. I enjoy the other forums I visit, but I always come back here because I prefer PSA slapped cards and because of the many experts who post here, people who freely share valuable hobby information that has taken them years to acquire.

New defaults/options with the board upgrade, like the 'evil penny' in the past.
  • One thing that really put me off was the new site "upgrade". I still dislike it.

Also Lots of good people getting banned because they did not share PSA's way of thinking.

100% agree. Can we PLEASE get some sort of "preview post" feature? It's got to be in the software somewhere.

I think people are also afraid/tired of the ban hammer since it is now swung so swiftly and easily. While they very often seem legit postings, as they say, this is PSA's playground and we have to follow their rules.

For me, too many good people banned and too many of the "problem children" have been allowed to stay. A lot of experience and information has left with those good members who were banned.

And to think, we used to think Carol was tough on us back in the day LOL

While I have not been on this board for very long, I have been around a long time. I see two things happening to the hobby of collecting baseball/sports cards. First, the majority of focus seems to be on the very high priced, high end, and expensive cards. I see this in auctions, on the boards, in the card shops, card shows, etc. There is not a thing wrong with this, I just don't see that fitting in with what a lot of us (majority?) can afford. Yes we all want the best cards possible but that is not always an 8, 9, or 10. As a result, things turn in to a "good ol' boys club" leaving a lot of us in the dust. All we can do is dream about nice cards and lick our chops as we view the cards vicariously. I do enjoy seeing your collections and the outstanding vintage cards (I primarily collect 56-60). I truly enjoy the comments from other, older collectors who possess vastly more knowledge than I possess. Not only does that bring back old childhood memories, I have learned a great deal from these folks that makes the hobby more interesting for me.
Second and my opinion only, the hobby has become more about "flipping" than truly collecting. I base this on the fact there are fewer and fewer older collectors and the younger folks are looking for profit. I have participated in, and watch many card box/case breaks, and almost 100% of the conversation is about how much a person can get for a particular card. Very little conversation about collecting. If a vintage player comes up in the break his name is generally butchered because it can not properly be pronounced or the breaker has likely never heard of the player.

I have no clue how my rambling above fits in to this topic. I guess I just wanted to participate and share my "old school" thoughts. Hope I didn't bore everyone!

I lurked for quite a while, joined three years ago and only started posting last year. There were some great members and I wish I would have been active years ago when the board was more active. But with the huge price increases, maybe we will start to see more activity.

Do you think because of other forms of social media coming into play, that people are leaving forums in general and posting to other groups on Facebook, Twitter, etc?

I belong to lots of different "closed groups" on Facebook not even card related and there is a crazy amount of activity. Do you think the same holds true for sports cards? Not to be a Debbie Downer, (ok maybe I am), but are forums in general becoming obsolete?

It's easy to blame it on the software upgrade, but other boards here on Collector's Universe seem to still be thriving.

    I've been here, I think, since 2004.

Back in the day we'd have regular group rips and people would SHARE their rips. Made those posts so much fun to read and participate in. More and more people are collecting unopened, or want to hold off from opening (understandable) so those kind of threads are boring now.

Also, and this may just be me, but it seems like the majority of posters here nowadays are just in it for an investment vs the love of collecting. Nothing wrong with this, but it just seems, to me, that is the primary direction of the board now.

As mentioned earlier, I think social media has taken a lot of the participation. It's so much easier to share pictures and stories on Facebook groups than it is here.

Anywho, I still come here daily and enjoy reading the posts.

Fewer threads and a higher percentage of those are either OT or boring.

Also most of the threads are not informative. This place used to be great for learning about the hobby. But many of the most knowledgeable members have been banned either for very trivial reasons and/or because they fell prey to all the trolls and alts. You can still learn things here and there, but the steady flow of useful information has slowed to a trickle.

I was on here probably 10 years ago and rejoined after a hiatus. I don't recall a lot about what it was like before but enjoy what people are willing to share. Two step process to increasing board activity.

1)Foregiveness and a second chance for all those banned. I know who some of them are and wish they were on here. I interact with them elsewhere and in other ways and find myself drifting to competitor sites to hear what they have to say. There is still great knowledge here. I don't know what some people did to get banned but it seems a large publicly traded company should be able to absorb some criticism without such a drastic move. Maybe there are some that deserve permanent bans. I don't know what everyone did obviously.

2)Whatever this updated version is needs another update for sure. I navigate around social media and other websites with ease and this format seems like a relic from the 90s. I am very active on Twitter and many find that difficult but it is a breeze compared to this forum. Posting pictures can be enormous projects at times it feels and often I intend to post pics and just say forget it when I hit snag. Even navigating personal messaging is complicated. We should be able to post pics right from our hard drive at least.

As one of the old guys at the club, this board used to be a heck of lot more interesting due to all of the drama and personal attacks. However I still learned A LOT about our hobby and it helped increased the enjoyment of collecting.

Brian Wentz used to be on the boards and he basically called out the Mastro Wagner issue several years before it became public. That thread alone was one of most fascinating reads ever.

The board is OK now, but I don't think it has declined at all over the past few years. It's off its peak, but its been OK for a while now.

The guard has changed here a lot in the time I've been posting; my collecting habits just don't align with the vast majority of posters. I have a general love of sports and sports cards, so I appreciate what is posted and chime in when I feel like I have something to add or simply give a word of praise to a collection. However, I've backed away from all forums/FB groups/etc., I'm able to sustain my passion for my cards without the need for openly sharing as much as I once did.

Funny how that works - get bored, do something, leave boredom behind!

Seriously though, the only thing I find "boring" is sorting cards into numerical order. This board is far from boring.

This hits at my general feeling of his board over the few years I have been a member here.

I can not tell you the number of times that I have made a post asking a question or a wtb looking for certain cards and gotten nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nada. It doesn't take many times of that happening that you just stop posting, asking questions, and asking people to take your money.
Congrats that to Net54 where there is always lively debate and I can usually find someone to give my money to.

Also I noticed from the beginning that the boards were heavily moderates. Stalin would have been proud as to how little discourse is allowed.

Contest that to CGC's message board for comics. I'm a
Member there and the forum was well moderated and they tolerated open discourse. Even if it was questioning of CGC. There were major hobby issues debated, scandals discovered, shysters pilloried, and the hobby promoted.

That, obviously, isn't the case here.

If people can't talk about the issues in the hobby, or won't talk to people when they ask questions, what the heck can be expected?

In Gary Michael Cappetta's voice "Coming down the aisle, making his way to the ringside area, from Vermont, weighing in at 190 lbs, former 2 time NWA heavyweight champion of the world, here is DanBessette!!!!!" Crowd pops tremendously. Dan always was a baby face when wrestling. He can cut a heel promo here and there, but the fans turned him face because of his move set.

It's up to the promotors to give him a decent push. He has what it takes and the fans want to see him make another run at the title...
