NEWPS - Old(ish) Copper

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not with any intent, I happened upon two coins I've been looking for for quite awhile in the grade of VG to F. Ended up with a "matching" pair of VG-10's!

Pardon the pic quality. Camera phone, and limited practice. :/

Yeah, VG-10 is a lowly grade. But these are a couple of tougher coins, and I think they look pretty sweet!

Got any VG coins you want to show off??

is it ok to use high end and VG10 in the same sentence?

And a question: I don't follow the PCGS generations all that closely. So which of the coins above is in the newest holder? I kind of assume it's the 2-Cent??

These are both the current holders.

Any Classic Head large cent with a CAC sticker is a peach. I think the mint soaked the planchets in brine for a month before they struck the coins, just to make sure they were good 'n corroded!

Here are some VG coins from my collection.

This 1804 quarter is NGC VG08. It has VG10 details, but the little rim nick on the reverse made NGC say it's only worth 8 points. I bought it raw from an old estate around 2008 or so.

Another VG coin from my collection is this S-3 Chain cent. ANACS called it VG Details with some sort of damage. It's in an old white holder from 2002 when I bought it out of the same old collection.

Here is a nice 1822 25/50C Bust quarter in PCGS VG08. Bought this coin from the same source. It was a good source!

Finally, this 1870-cc quarter makes PCGS VG10. It was off the market for a tremendous number of years before showing up in a Canadian auction of all places. I was not the lucky person who bought it for wholesale, but I am the lucky person who owns it presently.

Is the true color of that 1870 cc golden on the reverse? I'm guessing no, as it's completely different from the obverse. Lot of meat on that VG. Nice pickup on a tough quarter

But, they aren't identical?! Looking at the reverse holograms, bar codes, etc.....

That's a good lookin' Classic Head cent. I'm not surprised it got the Bean.

Old copper has a unique appeal .... the wear speaks of extensive use and the history it has

    endured. Cheers, RickO

Nice looking VG's on display here.

Yeah, we all want uncirculated, full strikes, great luster, etc. But there is something about a coin with honest wear and patina.... image

And, nobody answered my "PCGS Current Generation" question!? Which coin in the OP is in the most recent holder? I'm just not sure.....(though, I guess they are probably close enough to current to not matter....)

A circulated coin can certainly be a thing of beauty.

You are right, the one with the QR code reader is the current, and the other must be from last year or so.

Nothing wrong with VG coins....I have several in my Complete Dime Set. Those all look nice to me.

Early bust coins are quite attractive in vg and sometimes even as low as ag, and is the grade that most collectors can afford. Rhedden's 1804 quarter is a premium coin that will sell itself instantly at the vg price if offered. A vg bust coin is like a vf-xf seated coin or a BU Washington quarter. Most of my early bust coins are vg at best. I will gladly pay premiums for vg bust coinage that I need.
