True Views are Great!

So I just had my set re-imaged in preparation for display. The last time they were imaged was nearly a decade ago. I just have to say how much better they are at imaging now. Here are a few comparisons:

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I'm on the fence abut the new '64 TV versus the old. While I prefer the detail of the new TV, particularly on the obverse, it seems to me you get a better feel for the luster, on both the obverse and reverse, on the old TV. In any case, I like both images of the '64.

Really nice coins

Which photos, old and new, most look like the coin when 'in hand'?
They look better in the original pics, IMHO.
Is Darkhorse still doing the photography for PCGS?
Phil is still at it! And doing a hell of a job, too

If you want realistic shots stick to the 1st ones. If you want glamour shots, I guess congrats you got them in the 2nd shots.
EDIT: I edited my reply as it is not clear which images are new vs. old. If the 2nd images are the supposed "better" newer images, then I am surprised at your opinion...

Only the old TV's have the stock ticker.

I don't know a numismatic photographer who doesn't produce much better images today than 10 years ago.
Nice coins!
Lance.
First are new and 2nd are old....Very Nice!
This is correct. Sorry, but I thought it was self evident which were the old and which were the new. The old shots are 'washed out' whereas the new ones show the life of the coin
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Your coins are, too, if I may make the understatement of the week.
You could justify having a cover charge to view your collection in person.

I agree with TDN then that the new images are superior...only ongoing problem is the consistent red-shifting of TV images that has been going on since time immemorial.

".....in preparation for display."
I saw Dale Friend's Bust Halves on display at our host's table a few years ago.
Also, Peter Shireman's Barber Halves on display - which included he and I sitting
down together at the PCGS table and discussing each of his coins. Talk about a treat !!
So, TDN, when and where is the upcoming display ?
I also like the top images much better than the bottom.
The top images show a true MS coin, where as the lower
seem to be PL. Regardless, the subjects are superb !!
Thanks for sharing.

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
New Barber Purchases
gr8 coins, obviously.
was hoping to say the 1st images before anyone but others beat me to it.
room for improvement, either way. will say i don't like the glamour shot aka overexposed/diffused unless the coin calls for it.
your coins, your preference though.
for 10 years ago, those are pretty good compared to several other auction sites.
tx for sharing some monsters!

I like the first picture of each coin far more than the second picture. The second images seem like the angle is wrong to show the surfaces and they have too much light reflection. I also really dislike all the "busy-ness" around the pictures of the coins, and appreciate the simplicity of the first pictures.
Really nice coins

Thanks for the comments. I saw these come in and I thought "FINALLY! I get to do these again!".
When I first did your set I had only been at PCGS for a couple of months, and didn't really have much experience photographing US coins - nor was I fully aware of the very high standards and passion of US collectors.
The old images with the stock ticker are awful.
I agree with TDN then that the new images are superior...only ongoing problem is the consistent red-shifting of TV images that has been going on since time immemorial.
Yeah, we did away with the old stock ticker background back in 2010 when we moved to higher megapixel cameras. We've toyed with the idea of redesigning the standard template, but I think people would rather it stay the same or make their own backgrounds.
If you've ever had stuff photographed at the Long Beach show the red-shift this is a particular problem; the facility's power really fades in and out a lot, really messing with my incandescent lights. Generally people are fine with it, and I'm willing to make adjustments if the customer feels it's necessary. I wish we had time to more make more adjustments on a per-coin basis, but it's not practical unfortunately. Editing a typical coin takes under 12 seconds with our software.

Were they cracked out for the new pics or shot through the slab?
If cracked out, any re-grade candidates?

Then I DO like the new ones better.
The old ones are too bright and over-exposed.

The set was submitted for reholder and image only - so yes, the images were taken raw. I did subsequently choose 9 coins to be reviewed for grade. Of these 9, 5 got plused. Roadrunner will recognize this new member of the plus crowd:
In general, I did not choose to submit coins that already were the finest known (even if PQ), but rather coins where the pop had either doubled or exploded or a different coin had made a plus to be top pop. In other words, just keeping up with the Joneses...
Congrats on the +'s.

Those coins are sweet! I like the images also. I agree that the old images made them look like proofs.
