The US Mint as their own TPG

I the US Mint graded their own coins would you trust their grade or would you still send them to PCGS or NGC or crossovers? If they did that you could buy "raw" or "graded" at two price levels.

That would be an FPG - first party grader.

Interesting idea, it would at least force them to LOOK at some of the garbage they put out.

Never happen - too labor intensive, and would push up costs big-time.

Particularly the grade given by the seller!

If you buy into that theory....Imagine the conflict of interest for the Mint to do their own grading. image

That would be great image I made this coin 5 minutes ago and its another MS 70 .

On the other hand with moderns everyone seems to want 70's and that would make them more available.

Another possibility is some TPG becoming the "official grading service" of the US Mint. This would entitle them to use the term on a special label and also grade the coins before they were ever shipped to collectors. 69s and 70s would be priced differently by the mint. The option would still be there to purchase raw coins directly from the mint so as not to dilute the demand for other special labels.

Internal memo to the Grading Dept. Chief

It has come to our attention that we could save X amount of dollars if we just graded everything MS/PR 70 we would no longer require graders and come to think of it, a Chief Grader either.

    Sorry,

Well.. as a business plan, it might produce a profit center... at least initially. The big danger is if buyers decide they want a TPG label (as opposed to the purchased mint label) and it does not cross at grade.... Wow.... then the trouble begins....image And of course, you have the dubious practice of the fox guarding the hen house.....Cheers, RickO

Wonder if the registry will accept the Mist graded coins?

We can't event trust them to have the product on hand even after we order and pay for it.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
