Last one sold only made about 10K, so don't see this one getting to Price Guide.

JMHO, but that is a nicely preserved example of a Mint trial strike, the coin pictured below is what I would classify as a pretty Kennedy Half-Dollar.

It would be cool to have an entire 1964 SMS Set!

One of those (Roosie) is required in the Dime variety set and I HATE that. I don't think I will ever be willing to spend that kind of money on a Roosevelt Dime!

High grade for sure. But, not pretty at all to me. The die polish lines are somewhat distracting. The light toning patches and a few brownish spots will probably only get worse with age.

It looks like it was reconsidered and upgraded. It is in a new holder with a Rattler cert. number.
  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't believe these were ever in rattlers.
  • Wabbit2313Wabbit2313 Posts: 7,268 ✭✭✭✭✭

It is definitely a newer holder with an old cert. number. I suppose it could have been OGH but who knows for sure. All I know is that I never buy new holders with old cert. numbers. They have been maxed out with an upgrade in my mind.

    Gorgeous example!

The coin is no longer available, looks like it's been withdrawn from the auction. I was planning on bidding very strongly on this coin, so I'm quite bummed. Does anyone know what happened to this coin?

Call Heritage. I did that for a similar situation and actually got an answer once.

Actually this coin used to reside in an MS69 Specimen NGC holder that appeared in a Heritage auction in 2004. Despite the different photography 12 years apart, there are several identifiers that match the two offerings.

"Pretty Kennedy" is something of an oxymoron for me. image

    They bore me to tears.

That being said, as Kennedy halves go, that IS a very nice one.

There has been a whole lot of hogwash written out there in cyberspace by so-called experts who mostly don't know what they're talking about regarding these coins and have never bothered to do their homework.

thanks for the clarification on the "rattler" and OGH. your post above from the other thread and your discussion from years past have been very informative. I think all we disagree on is the Pattern/SMS designation, but that's not really important. please keep posting what you know about these interesting and rare Modern issues.

Thanks, I called them and much to my surprise actually got an answer. The coin was pulled from this auction, however it will be auctioned off at the ANA show in Anaheim.

Although this coin is pretty, I can get others just as pretty for $10. What makes this different is it is also very rare.

if you're referring to the OP's coin it is indeed rare with less than 20 known.

I don't see any 1964 SMS Kennedy half in the ANA Heritage auction ... Wonder what happened to it?

I guess that answers the question about whether or not die polish lines detract from the grade a coin receives. Looks like a lot of them in the video.

I have a lot of Kennedy halves... just pulled a few...the '98S matte proof, '98S Specimen MS69, '64 PR68DCAM, '64 PR69 ....others in later years DCAM...no SMS yet.... will look more later... Cheers, RickO
