Heh- I love finding those '21-D breaks- so many cool ones.
You Suck! Awarded 6/2008- 1901-O Micro O Morgan, 8/2008- 1878 VAM-123 Morgan, 9/2022 1888-O VAM-1B3 H8 Morgan | Senior Regional Representative- ANACS Coin Grading. Posted opinions on coins are my own, and are not an official ANACS opinion.
This particular '21 D has a lot of die cracks and a "Capped R" . A die gouge caused this , I believe. It is the spot above the R in AMERICA. You may note some extruded metal (silver) in the field between the letter and dentils. Had to look it up to see it's a VAM1B. Not that this will make much sense to non variety or non VAM folks. A serious collector and top registry collector who is passionate about VAM collecting could tell all, but he's too busy going through "junk" and scoring with other RARITIES. (I call them oddities). They get their "R" factor from how difficult they are to find.
This was listed in the VAM book as an R 5 . Not that common, and as someone said earlier "shouldn't be in a junk bin". However, this is often how bullion dealers , not coin dealers , see less than MINT STATE coins.
I found an 1897-S Barber Half in a junk box not too long ago. Had it not looked like it was used as a puck in a game of street hockey, it would have been really nice!!
Nice one Bob. Thanks for sharing. It's the cherrypickers garden where some of the best finds are.
Speaking of ANACS, I purchased a beautifully toned (MS 62 formerly) coin from a board member on eBay (Smittys) a few months back. Just got around to cracking it out and resubmitting it to PCGS. Thought it had a good chance at upgrade and it came back MS 64 BN (was hopeful for RedBrown, but alas)
There are some good finds out there. Your story reminds me of a few serious VAM guys who pride themselves on knowing those many PUPs (pick up points).
I think where we play, we find toys along the way. And it's the best field of play ever.
This is off course because it wasn't found in a junk bin, per se.... unless we think that's what Ebay is.

Lafayette Grading Set
It's amazing what can be bought at melt.
I have found many VAMS in there and two 1879-CC Morgans,
And my favorite was a 1919-S Buffalo with a big wad of glue on the reverse,
Cleaned it up and sent to ANACS and it was net graded AU-50 cleaned,
not bad for 69 cents plus $12 grading fee, S& H.
