Help with possible 1883 Shield Nickel overdate

Hi all,

I have an 1883 Shield nickel that I had on eBay. I received an inquiry as to whether or not it had a die crack across the date. I got out the trusty ole magnifying glass and couldn't see anything. the inquirer thought it was possibly a LDS, but my fields around the date seemed very clean, no sign of a die crack to me.

As I was going through some pics that I had taken with my dino-lite, I actually found a shot of the 3 of the date I had taken before the coin was slabbed. First I noticed some material around and inside the upper loop of the three, then I noticed it actually had a die crack across the 3, possibly EDS, I don't know. I also noticed a small die chip below and to the lower right of the 3. This is the first picture below.

I then took another pic of the date with the dino-lite through the slab. Unfortunately, I could not get a real close pic since the dino-lite is too far from the coin because of the thickness of the slab. However, there is material also in the top loop of the 1st 8 as well as some to the left, in the v of the 8...That is the 2nd picture below.

I checked the CPG 5th ed I have and could not find anything that matched what I have.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or info.

No, this is not an overdate that is recognized as such by any major grading service. It does look like it may be an S1-5005, which I have listed in SNV as a possible but unconfirmed overdate. If you post a good picture of the entire obverse, I'll probably be able to tell. Even if it is S1-5005, it won't be worth a premium over a non-variety 1883.

Looks more like a retained chip...although that is unlikely... Cheers, RickO
