BU 1964 Kennedy error find

Looking thru some newly acquired 64's halves and found this. Can anyone tell me if its a defective planchet or lamination error ? there are three separate spots around the rim on the obv. The rev. has about 8 separate missing metal spots. Any info on this is appreciated.

Obv. - Y in LIBERTY
Rev. - I in AMERICA, M in AMERICA

Kind of hard to tell without closeup pictures of the area. Perhaps a thinner planchet area near the 'Y' of LIBERTY and 'IM' of AMERICA?

  • I will work on some better close-ups pics. When using my 16x loupe, the areas are jagged and uneven. Thanks

Almost looks like residue of some sort. If it was a thinner planchet, there might have been more weakness on the rim and lettering.

The new photo's are not there... but from the OP..It looks like planchet surface issues...however, that being said, I do not understand why it would only be around the rim. Is it elsewhere on the reverse? Cheers, RickO

Is it possible it's from a rusted and pitted die like this 1970-D Kennedy?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
