Oh boy, Heritage is at it again!!

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got a catalogue in the mail for what looks like Heritage once again holding Token and Medal Auctions at Long Beach. Maybe I haven't been paying attention but it seems like about 8-10 years since they've done something like this. Hallelujah!!!

I had already placed some bids and started watching quite a few items, I did some viewing just last night but didn't realize they were issuing a catalogue even though the unopened package was on the kitchen table.

Any hunches about how long they'll do this or initial impressions?? It bodes well for an Exonumi-holic like me even if I don't win anything. Check out lot #98059, Franklin "Beaver" Medal by Reich, what a gem!! Hope springs eternal.

As she just performed nationally last week on the Billboard's Music Awards in what was considered a rousing success I'd suggest you brush up on your pop culture.
(Her concerts in Las Vegas are often sold out too.)

I hope everyone ignores this token and medal auciton. There are few pieces I'd like to buy in it. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I thought they stopped producing music after 1983. When is the next Simon and Garfunkel album coming out?

complicating everything is that Stack's/Bowers has an auction in conjunction with the ANA in August but the lot list probably won't post before this Heritage sale. it would be easier to see what both offer before winning something.

I doubt the Stacks sale will compare to this one as far as items that are tempting to me.

I hope it doesn't if I win anything big now! image

keets, that beaver medal would be my number one choice overall but I am guessing it will be way out of my range right now.

If you win it maybe I can rent it for a month or two.

I think they're having this sale because of a fortuitous, large consignment of a valuable medal collection. I wouldn't expect a repeat anytime soon unless another large, valuable consignment appears on their doorstep.

I perused the gallery that was set up on NGC's site for this collection.

It is an amazing collection and unusual to have stayed intact so long.

It's a weird sale. There are lots of medals -- and many of them are in very nice condition -- but they're almost all common, or at least "common" in the context of their series.

I count 160 US Mint medals (might not be exact), which puts this in the top half dozen or so auction sales in my records in terms of number of US Mint medals. There are only 120 different varieties, though, with the rest duplicates. For 2/3 of those 120 varieties, I have at least 5 sale records in the last 5 years.

Under different circumstances, I'd say that Heritage held out the "good stuff" for a later sale. That doesn't seem likely... so a very unusual sort of selection here.

I'll bid on stuff if the prices are low enough (which doesn't seem likely, with many of the starting prices pretty much where the final prices should be, based on recent sales). If I get priced out, I won't be too sad. There's not much in this sale that I'm watching eagerly.
