Waited 20 years before I saw my Liberty collection

BIGAL2749BIGAL2749 Posts: 742 ✭✭✭✭
I completed a DATE set of $20 Liberty Double Eagles in the mid 90's but they were spread out over 3 smaller home safes and three 10" x 10" x20" that were packed thanks to the size that slabbed coins take.

Today was the first occasion to see them in their entirety

Advantage to a date set as for $20 Lib is at least one relatively common mint exists for all year except 1886 where only 1000 were minted. A case there a proof is easier than the business strike

I do have 70 different date + mint marked pieces with 23 duplications.

Only a few stand outs such as 1850-O Au-53, 1861 MS-63, 1886 Au-58

Now that I see them assembled I thinking of looking for other issues. There are least 4 issues that will make it into the set

That had to have been AWESOME to see all laid out like that. How did it feel?

That is pretty cool! What a feeling it must have been to get them all together and see them all at once!

I just showed my daughter your pictures and she asked if you had all those gold coins because you were a pirate. Nice picture.

    My goodness!

Any early David Hall flip 'slabs' in there?

That's a collection to be proud of.

Congratulations on your $20 Lib date set. It is very impressive and quite an accomplishment. The 1886 $20 is an incredibly rare coin with around 50 known and expensive—approaching six figures.

What are the 4 issues that you plan to add?

    Thanks for sharing.

Now that is an impressive collection of gold! I would not have been able to wait 20 years to see it all together.

The 1861 is shown in a mediocre picture, but appears to be a superb 63. Is there a back story on that one?

    Great accomplishment!!!

I'm told that it's not uncommon for collectors to buy coins, put them away, and hardly (if ever) look at them again. I don't understand this but it's common.

    Again, nice set!!

    Sweet!

-Are all the dates in there? (54-O, 55-O, 56-O, etc?) I see some stacks have more than one coin.

-What are the blue colored plastic flips?

-Did you try for a particular grade on them?

Finally, I wonder if the Fatty's have some upgrades in them. I personally do not trust PCGS old green holders. I also spot a Rattler and an old ANA slab. What a cool diverse slab collection to compliment the awesome accomplishment.

Impressive accomplishment! I think you should view them all together a little more often than once every 20 years. I know I would! image Very very nice!

I think this might be true in part because of the ease in which collectors can now have decent pictures of their coins. A "virtual collection" at home without tbe worry of theft, destruction, etc.

    Thanks Guys for the remarks

I meant to say there are 4 coins I will never be able to get such as the 54-O and 56-O

One coin so far has been sent to CAC (I believe the 1861) 20 years ago there was no CAC

Teal or blue flips are auction flips (most are Stacks and Goldbergs) that were sent to me that way and I've never pulled them out to have graded

I do have the 1905 and 1906 missing from the photo but somehow missed them when I gathered them together. My organization skills match my photo skills.

You may want to check for PVC. I have a flip from an old Stacks auction and it has a PVC ring where the coin used to be.
