Thanks Lance. I thought MD, but the fact that the doubling doesn't go around the end of the feathers had me confused.

MD is a mystery to me anyway.

MD is when the coin turns during striking.....right?

The whole coin has to turn....not just part of it.....right?

So, how does just part of the coin get doubled???????

I'm with Spock on this......Does not compute!

Don't feel bad. I'm not sure I understand it either.

    .

some old timers refer to it as die chatter. some mico bounce/shimmy of the dies and/or flan.

can happen during ejection as well.

since legitimate doubling/tripling etc happens during hubbing or whatever, the dies/hubs get much more pressure creating a second/third design element(s) (somewhere for metal to go vs some minor play in the coin striking process with nowhere to go for the extra metal but in odd, uneven, confusing etc directions.

the doubling on this buff is uneven and just ugly, no offense to your buff, whereas, class I to class VI (i think it is VI) creates uniform, even if odd but a nice semmetry?/look from big doubled spread and some elements get split serifs to major extra thickness with virtually no split serifs.

ed, md etc usually has the same consistent crappy look despite the amount of mushed metal.

die chatter and ejection doubling can appear quite different, especially depending on the design element.

ed/md can also be on ddr, ddo, tdo, tdr/rpm/omm/rpd/mpd etc furthering the confusion/oddity of appearance.

    happy hunting.

That's always difficult for me to distinguish as well.

I think one of the tricks to help is that the secondary image of mechanical doubling is generally in lower relief, like a stair step, whereas with true die doubling, both images are in the same relief.
