Yes, but I try to remember that they don't know you and will never see you again. Unless, of course, someone does know you and sees you scooping it up!
But I still do it 100% of the time. Regardless of who is watching, who is near, and how they look at me. Not only that, I actually sweep the return slot with my hand every single time. No exceptions.
This is one of those things where you'll miss 100% of the coins you don't reach for.
Because of this, I've found hundreds of coins from steel cents to buffalo nickels to mercury dimes, tokens of every imaginable variety, and coins literally from around the world.

That's what I told myself that time I visited a nude beach many years ago.
I think it's human nature to feel like someone's watching when one is doing something "odd", but I also don't think other people notice these activities as much as we think they do. It's happening all around us every day.

Do you feel a little odd when you scoop up coins from a Coinstar machine?
Dunno. Maybe I would, if my local Coinstar machine actually ever HAD coins in the reject bin. My all-time (and only) big score thus far has been a single sea-green colored Zincoln (date unreadable) with moon-surface corrosion craters in it.
For all you people who DO find stuff in the CoinStar machines: you suck.
I usually employ my children to do the deed. Have had a lot of good times at the coinstar machine coming back from ballet lessons. Last month, found a couple of steel cents. A little farther back, a silver dime. Enough to break up the monotony of grocery shopping and stimulate some interest in coins for the little ones.

Only when there is so much in the bin that it requires two or three swipes to get all of it. A couple months ago I pulled $4.54 out of the bin - a couple of handfulls. No silver that time, but plenty of lunch money!!
I used to look at any vending type machine I would pass by. Then one of my girls picked up on my actions and would sometimes run to the machines to check 'em out. My wife used to get so mad at me for teaching my girl to do that. Every once in a while it does pay off.

Not really.... I just reach down and grab them... once, it took three grabs... that day I got $1.97 if I remember correctly... Have found several Euro's but no good collector coins. Cheers, RickO
I think a much better way to come up with some change is to find a shopping cart at Aldi that still has the quarter in the slot. No one notices that. You just pull out the cart and go shopping while slipping your own quarter back into your pocket.
I've found that looking through coins all day is tedious, monotonous, straining to the eyes, and taxing. All of which lead me to walk briskly past machines with a change slot. I don't even think of looking. And plus, it's not my property. (that's just me) Each is entitled to their own.
For me, not so much taking a quick swipe through both the return bin and the receiving tray. but when I look "under" the machine is when I wonder if anyone is looking? Oh yes, like mentioned earlier, also when there is a fair amount of coinage in the bin.

I used to check the return slots on pay phones when I was a kid. Don't think I ever found anything. No Coinstar machines in my usual travels. I do usually pick up coins when I see them on the ground.

how many coins in a coinstar scoop?

No charges.
It got me to thinking that it's technically stealing.
Scored 26 cents a few days ago. I am a criminal yet charged.
Tonight's gift was ironic.
My wife was saying we needed to take her parents, in their 80's to see Canada, as they have never been out of the country.
At the Coinstar was a $2 Canadian, with the usual Console pennies, a battered quarter, and 1 silver dime.

Depends on the location of the machine. I prefer the -out of the way machines- where it's less likely I'll be observed.
Found a silver dime a couple of weeks ago, after a lengthy spell of mostly foreign and modern rejects.
