Any chance this 1838 toner bustie will grade?

Just picked this up. Anyway it might grade with the scratches on the obverse? Also grade opinions would be appreciated. I know the pics suck but just give it your best.

The obverse gouge is too large for a straight grade IMO.

You might get lucky. But my guess is it won't straight-grade due to the scratches.

    Looks AU-details.

It's a beauty but it is a details coin. I would also agree with Ikeigwin on the grade.

    .

is the big one a scratch or planchet defect? shadowing makes it hard to tell and im at the end of a several day coin buying/selling binge.

the tipping point has occurred with me about having proper hydration/snacks and plenty of both.

I don't think it would or should. (No offense)

negative ghost rider, those scratches are too much.
I always ask, if you received a coin in a PCGS holder with something like that on the coin, would you be ok with it?

I doubt it, but even if it did I would not view it as a choice example.

I pretty much figured the responses I would get on this. Wishful thinking on my part I guess.

Since your title is "toner bustie", I would imagine you were wondering if the toning would cause an issue with the grading.

However, I, like most others, focused in on the scratches on the obv (well, one looks like a gouge...) and think it won't/shouldn't grade from that.

If I were a buyer, unless this was a very hard to find coin, wouldn't want it with those scratches.

I'm with the no crowd. The scratch is too large and visible to straight grade.

    Nice coin otherwise.

Too bad... I believe it will details grade... nice coin otherwise...Cheers, RickO

Zero percent for a straight grade at any reputable TPG, I'm afraid.

Too bad, 'cause it is otherwise attractive.

I would leave it in the old school Capital Plastics holder. (Or in the dealer''s case, if it doesn't yet belong to you. Unless it was crazy cheap.)

I would say not. That gouge is too much. Plus the tone looks like Taco Bell napkin type. Probably tried to tone the thing to hide the gouge.

I do own it. Picked it up at a local auction and yes I thought the price was more than reasonable to make a few bucks at some point. I do like the older holder also

Although it can't be seen in the pics the luster is all there and the color more vibrant than in the pic.
