What was the most expensive cup of coffee you've ever had?

What I'm getting at is...have you ever been looking on Ebay at buy-it-now new listings, gotten up to have a cup of coffee (or favorite thirst quencher) only to come back to the computer and find out that a fantastic cherry pick just passed you by because of that momentary stoppage in your search? If so, what was that coin and how much of a cherry pick was it?

What was a "dough moment" for one person was a "doh" moment for the other...

Not exactly an answer to the original question, but along the same vein, in the past month I have missed out on somewhere between $6000-$8000 in potential profit due to either poor Internet connection or cold feet.

Yepp, cold feet is what gets me too. If it is too good to be true it probably is, which leads me to read the description and look over the picture, by the time I am ready to commit it is gone.

I dropped a cup of coffee on my desk at work two years ago. It bounced once and landed upside down on the keyboard of my Asus laptop. I am not kidding you when I say that coffee poured out of the USB ports like a double-shot emanating from a fine, Italian-made espresso machine. Minus one $800 laptop.

Good news: no coins were injured during this incident.

Potential winnings are not the same as true winnings. Missed opportunities cannot be so quantified, although we all have some.

Also, as my wife would (and does) say, "So what if you got a good deal? You're gonna keep it and not sell it so it's value becomes nothing!"

I mentioned here before about bookmarking a grossly underpriced fresh fixed price listing of a rare Betts medal, thinking oh, no one will find or notice this since it isn't described accurately in the listing title. Hah !

Come back 15 minutes later and it is sold. image

So, those that do not drink coffee (or any other thirst quencher) have never gotten up to go to the bathroom, answered a doorbell, had your wife ask you to take out the garbage, snoozed, or anything happen that would distract you from following an auction or miss a new listing that was bought faster than you could pull the trigger, thus losing a golden opportunity for a great cherry pick? I can imagine you non-coffee drinkers, all sitting at your computers, wearing Depends, being catered food and drink from the maid, and having the quickest draw on your keyboard in the West (or East or Midwest) Haha....I know I've lost a few opportunities through the years to you, the immovable ones.

Ive missed a few lots, waiting until the last five minutes to enter a bid. Sometimes its food on the stove, but usually the 'ol lady, drinking coffee, wanting attention

Missed this Super common coin when I was informed of guests coming over, as they arrived. Nothing special, just a cool piece.

Anyone wanna show the ones that got away?

Completely off-topic but not too long ago I was double-parked in front of a coffee shop and only ran in quick for an iced java and a muffin. The total came to less than $4. Too bad as I exited there was a meter maid just putting a ticket under my wiper blade. With the $75 fine, that was one expensive $79 cup of coffee.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

    About $880,000

My first and only trip to starbucks was in 2006 when a friend at the time convinced me to start a non-profit and I figure that move cost me about $80,000 per year since. That said, the value of working on something I love is priceless.
I'd like my copper well done please!

I do not drink coffee... and though I no longer frequent ebay, I did at one time. Back in the

'old' days.... (late nineties, early 2000's), before ebay became so corrupted with fakes, scams and

garbage, there were good deals to be found. When I found something I really wanted, I would be sure to be there for the closing... and place a nuclear bid at five seconds or less (record was three seconds)....never lost an item I really wanted. I did overpay for a few though. Cheers, RickO

Man, I had no idea there were so many coin collectors that didn't drink coffee! I, myself, probably appreciate coffee more than coins. Drink it by the gallon. Nothing like sitting down with the collection and a nice, hot cup of Joe...

When I was a lot younger I was a blackjack dealer in Lake Tahoe and being that I was reckless and immortal I took some big risks. One day off I got the itch to play some blackjack. I dropped $2000 on the table and took $100 chips. When I was getting my chips the waitress came by and asked if I wanted a drink. I asked for coffee. There were two Japanese girls sitting next to me playing table minimum. I was playing $100 a hand and it was a single deck game. First and second shuffle were unremarkable. Third shuffle was the stuff of legends. I was counting cards and the count went astronomically plus. In 4 years of dealing and playing I had never seen a deck get that favorable for the players and still have enough cards left to deal another hand.

I had $1900 in chips. The two Japanese girls played table minimum. I played the table max of $1000 on one hand and $900 on a second hand. Cards were dealt. Dealer had a 10 showing. Japanese girl #1 flips a blackjack. Japanese girl #2 flips a blackjack. My first hand was a 20. My second hand was a 19.....and I knew I had lost them both. I stood pat, dealer flipped his card over and had.....a blackjack. Just then the waitress came by with my coffee. Tipped her and walked back to my car drinking the coffee.

Thanks coinkat; good eye too. You nailed both of them - Fiestaware saucer, and Fire King mug. Not sure what date the Sanka can is. Picked it up in an antique mall several years ago. The nice thing about Fire King is that they can be used in a microwave oven.

If you missed something which was a true pick you have yourself to blame. All you had to do was set it up in a snipe program like AS.

I remodeled my kitchen last year and had commercial espresso equipment installed. Set me back about 4k. I'm into it to say the least, but I'll prob pay for it this year as my friends and family are all about coming over for a "shuttle". Best thing I've bought in a long time. The next step for me now is roasting.

The snipes are only good on end of auction bids (as I understand it), not newly listed buy it nows. I usually scroll the buy it nows because sometimes a cherry pick comes along that you have to be on top of or it's gone to some other lucky person. That's where the coffee break (or other interruption) becomes expensive..
