Are there collectors trying to build states quarter set and presidential dollar sets anymore

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭✭✭
recently had to go through a collection that took up 8 boxes and every coin came from a large coin dealer, we all probably know who. Anyway the guy paid between 50-70,000 for a pile of worthless junk, like 31.99 for a colorized presidential dollar, etc etc.
in the end the collection is probably worth about 10,000 on a really good day, and that is only because he has a lot of rolls of presidential dollars and states quarter that total a few thousand face. the rest of the value was from some world gold and over graded morgans that he was sold.

Anyway, the point of this post is I thought instead of breaking all these rolls apart and having him deposit them, I thought I would be able to sell them for face value to the local dealers. Thought they would have some need for them. Every dealer I talked with in the area had no interest at face. I was told that there is zero demand in the area for any state quarters or presidential dollars, even recommended we send the proof ones to the bank that were in the companies special cellophane holders.
Now I have absolutely no interest in modern coins, well except the 2016 merc which I think are really cool, however, I didn't realize no one else seems to care either. Is this just a local phenomenon or are the states quarters and presidential dollars dead.
I know when they first came out a lot of people started trying to accumulate them, but everyone I knew who did that quickly lost interest.

Many people are collecting them but few pay over face for them.

I do put away nice BU examples when I come across them, but I'm not going to pay more than face value.

I recently bought a collection similar to the one you are working with, I payed face and sold them for face..... the only reason I did it was to get to the gold and a few other decent coins in the collection...

I think the Statehood and ATB quarters are great.

Kids can get an album and pull them out of circulation, like the old days with Lincoln Cents.

The Prez dollars don't circulate so I doubt many are collecting those.

But I am. I have a proof set for every year since I was born, so I have a complete Ike, SBA, Sac, and Prez dollar sets from my proof sets, along with all the quarters.

You should be able to get a premium for the rolls on eBay.

Yesterday when I was walking into the bank I saw a 20 age or so kid breaking open rolls of uncirculated state quarters to cash them out. He mentioned to the teller that he inherited them from his grandpa.

It's just a matter of your time and energy vs. making a few bucks on eBay.

You could possibly squeeze a few bucks out of them, but would it be a worthwhile expenditure of your time?

If you have only face in them your best bet might be just putting them up on eBay at a fixed price, with "free" shipping, and let them sit until a buyer comes along.

If you do a true auction at a low starting price, you would likely end up losing money.

Best bet (to save time and money) is to take them to the bank and deposit/exchange for face value.... Cheers, RickO

Why did he break the rolls open?

at my bank I will have to break the rolls open, they want unrolled change, they then run through their counter. At least they don't charge for this

I'm doing both in Dansco albums.. Basically for the kids and they are real cheap and kinda neet put together. The Danso for the prez bucks is real nice with pages giving a little bio for each president.

Some local banks won't take rolled coins. They point to the counting machine and tell you to bring back the stub. Been doing that a few years where I am located.

Yep, as said above they said he needed to break them open and they would put them through the counting machine.

Try putting together a 50 state quarter set of Major Mint Errors.

That is quite a task and an extremely cool set.

No. Not if they have to buy them. There are a few collectors still putting sets from circulation for fun-like me. They have no value above face. It will not be worth the time and effort to ebay them, with the selling fees you most likely will not even break even.

Some day ... in about 572 years, someone is going to be looking for a statehood quarter.

The question would be answered knowing if the folder/albums for the sets are still being sold at a decent rate. I am sure there are still a lot of people pulling this out of change for albums. Some may not be too serious about it, but still doing it.

we sell plenty of both, I sold a complete set of SHQ's in a pair of Dansco albums just last week. we used to call from a sheet when the next one came in but now they call us. all I will say is that although some are eager for both programs to end they continue the sets they started. we also continue to sell current issues when they are released, but not as many as we used to do maybe five years ago.

I've got dozens of rolls of state quarters and presidential dollars that I got at face from the bank. Also an album started but not finished for each.

The project is currently "on hold"

Can't be bothered to haul them out, even.. who's got the time?

I sold two empty boards for state quarters at a yard sale on Saturday.
