next HOF rookie cards to take off in price or undervalued

With the unreal prices we have seen on PSA 7 and 8s of Mantle rookies, Mays rookies and Clemente rookies and Namath rookies, what is your list of HOf and/or rookie cards that still are flying under the radar of the huge money buyers.
Here is my list, none are cheap per se, but still seem reasonable compared to the run ups we have seen in Mantle, Clemente. These all seem like must haves (or at least wants) for hard core collectors regardless of grade

1. T206 cobbs still seam reasonable in PSA 5-7 range for such an iconic player
2. The 1933 Goudey Ruths in PSa 4-7 range seem reasonable too. No they arent his rookie, but there arent enough 1915-16 Ruth rookies around and not many other Ruths from his playing days
3. 54 Aaron still seems like it has room to go up in a 5-8 range
4. 1939 Playball Williams in any grade
5. 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson in any grade
6. 1955 Killebrew in 7-9
7. 1954 Kaline in 7-9
8. 1957 Bill Russell in PSA 6-8
9. 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain in 7-9
10. 1969 Jabbar rookie in 7-9
11. 1950s football rookie cards of the all time greats, Unitas, Brown, Starr, pricey but not in the stratosphere yet
12. 1970 Maravich in 8 or 9
13. 1972 Dr. J in 8-9
14. 1980 Bird/Magic in 7-9

One I was watching on ebay just sold for a little over 4k.

lseecon, I'm not sure if you saw what the 57 russell psa 7 (and 8) sold for in heritage on thursday; if not, here's a link to it:

    http://sports.ha.com/itm/baske...owseThisAuction-120115

I am simply amazed that someone was willing to pay that much for a 7 when all but one of the previous examples of the card have sold for at most half of that amount; I was planning to start a thread about this (or continue the one ryan started last week about basketball unopened) as I am shocked that three days after the auction ended nobody has even mentioned the very high hammer price for this card. By comparison the 8 sold for almost 36k but that didn't really come as any surprise since the last 8 sold for $33,460.00 in november (that one was also in heritage). With all of the ongoing discussion on here about Jordan rookies, the bird erving magic rookie and even Dr j rookies I am very surprised that this iconic card has not been given the same attention on here--everyone has their opinion and is certainly entitled to it and i'm sure many would disagree with me but I feel that the russell rookie is perhaps the second most iconic basketball card after the 48 bowman Mikan rookie.

Collectors now who are 50-55 grew up watching players like Rose, Seaver, Ryan, Bench, Reggie, Schmidt, Brett... I think that people will collect the all time greats like Mantle, Aaron, Mays... but will now look to players they watched as kids for sentimental reasons as well as price. How many Bench rookies can you buy for the price of an Aaron 8? Better yet you could buy all of the above cards in PSA 8 and some 9's for the price of an Aaron or Clemente 8.

    Rose just popped...PSA 8 16,000
  • Hockey still appears VERY cheap relative to other sport counterparts. I understand there are fewer hockey collectors but the spread of prices between ICONS/ HOFers by sport screams BUY to me for Hockey ICONs like Bobby Orr PSA 6 and above, Wayne Gretzky OPC PSA 8-9, Mark Messier OPC PSA 9-10s, Mario Lemieux OPC PSA 10 rookies to name a few.

Ernie Banks cards seem to me to have room to grow, partly because of the Cubs' rabid fan base.

    OMG

    That was just like $3,700.

Check out this 8.5 that went through the roof recently.

    8.5 Rose

I sure hope for Mint Moon Dogs sake he didn't actually sell everything.

  • I am really surprised that the henderson rookie in a 9 (considering the extremely low pop of 10's) isnt in the $800-$1200 range yet. Especially considering that boxes sell about 9-$1100.
  • PSASAPPSASAP Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭
Wow, the centering on the Rose rookie that sold wasn't particularly nice either.

Of the major fb hof rcs the 2 that have not taken major jumps in symmetry with their accomplishments are Unitas and Largent. I bought Payton/Dorsett/Rice/Montana/Young/Marino/Elway/Campbell/Largent psa 9 rcs several years ago. All have gone up exponentially except Largent. Bought the Unitas in Psa 7, price has stayed close to the same where Starr in psa 7 and next generation of qb greats in psa 8 and higher have exponentially moved up as well.

Take it for what it is worth. Those are the 2 best values out there in my opinion

I would say that some of the outside "sports" have room to grow.......I still would like the long term outlook on guys like Hulk Hogan, Mike Tyson, Andre the Giant, Tiger Woods, those guys were all truly giants that everyone knows........ Olympians are a bit too fleeting .....Jack Nicklaus RC.....
    BUYING Frank Gotch T229 Kopec
Looking to BUY n332 1889 SF Hess cards and high grade cards from 19th century especially. "Once you have wrestled everything else in life is easy" Dan Gable

For 1957 Unitas, PSA 7 hasn't climbed as much as the higher grades. PSA 8 was $1800-$2000 in 2014, but now it's $4.5k+. PSA 9 just sold on Memory Lane for $151k. And SGC 92 went for over $14k on Heritage.

With those recent sales, I'm guessing the PSA 7's will start to climb as well.

I'd say the 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson. The portrait card in particular. Some great research has come out that shows the set was most likely released over a few years and the portrait card was the first one issued. It also suggests that the set may have been more widely distributed than previously thought. Member CharlieBrown over on the Net54 board has done some fantastic research on this set. Kudos to him.

Another card that popped into my mind is the 1954 Johnston Cookies Hank Aaron. Love that it was distributed in Milwaukee during Hank's rookie year.

  • Looks like the beginning of a jump from a very underrated 1st ballot HOFer Willie Stargell. PSA 8 sold today for $961 and not from one of the 2 big consignors. Not shilled either as there were 7 bidders over $675.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-TOPPS-553-WILLIE-STARGELL-HOF-RC-PSA-8-NICELY-CENTERED-SHARP-GB0410-/191869331959
  • I'm shocked by the prices I've seen. I recall PSA 8's of key rookie cards in my price range only 3 years ago. Forget about it now. I'm shooting for the low end of PSA with the jumps I have seen, whether they were real or shilled.

Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere here but I think the 1965 Topps Steve Carlton RC is an undervalued card relative to what a great pitcher he was.

May not be "vintage", but the 1989 Topps "BIG BASEBALL" Randy Johnson rookie has been stuck at a population of only 7 in a PSA 10 for about 2 years. And the number of raw copies and "series 3" wax boxes (which the Johnson card can be pulled from) that come up for sale is surprisingly low.

Show me another HOF rookie card with that low of a population in a PSA 10....then tell me what that card sells for.

With the rise in individual card prices and the relative lag in unopened I still think HOF rookie cards showing on either wax or cello packs are going to take off in price. If I had to pick just one the Bird and Magic rookie would be my pick and the Jordan rookie sticker a decent second. Talk about low population items, compared to PSA 10 counterparts of the rookie cads.

The Koufax rookie in PSA 7 has gone way up this year. It went from around $1800 in January to over $3k in April. Last 3 recent sales $3900, $4400 and $3200.

I think him missing out on multiple MVP awards really hurt his legacy. Also Eddie was usually the quiet guy in the back of the room. With that being said Eddie was always the most feared hitter in that lineup, not Cal Ripken.

FYI before I get flamed for realizing that Eddie was indeed a better hitter then Cal. I am an O's fan and grew up going to Memorial Stadium.

Agreed you just never know how some members will react. I mean hell in the Boggs vs. Gwynn discussion someone kept associating Gwynn with PEDs but I bet that exact same guy wouldn't dare do that to Cal.

  • Don't get me started on cal and Ped's I've always found it funny that with all the allegations tossed around that Cal and Ryan escaped them. I don't throw those around cause who knows anymore but both of those guys played forever, one never seemed to age and the other either played thru injuries or healed quicker than the average human. My go to on PED's is to just judge players on the era they played. I don't see how anyone can compare Ruth and Bonds or Mantle and Trout or whoever without just saying those guys where the best of there era and leave it at that. Anything else just seems like arguing for arguing a sake.
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was under the impression that many of the old time players were extremely heavy drinkers and out boozing it up at night. If that is true then their numbers are even better then they look due to playing under these conditions during their careers.
