The story of two Ikes. One 'made it', the other? Not so lucky.

Ok, so here is a toned Ike that made it through the grading and finalization process with PCGS.

Then you have another that wasn't as fortunate.

Better eyes may see what I am missing- as they appear to sort of have the same general toning.

I don't see what the big deal is, they do look similar. Kind of funny considering it's probably the same set of graders that looked at both coins.

They both went through at completely different times. Different graders, different opinions. Now if they were each in on the same submission, then that would be a bit weird.

71-S was graded more than 10 years ago and at the time, this type of toning was market acceptable per PCGS at the time.
The 72-S could be newly graded and its grading code is 91 (aka questionable color). Apparently, it is not market acceptable now.

More people are doing their own toning than 10 years ago as well.

The 71-S was graded some time ago (7 digit certification number) and reholdered more recently (extra zero was added to the certification number).

The 72-S was graded more recently (8 digit certification number).

Other than that, different graders (more than likely) and different standards at different times.

If you want them to match, crack the 71-S out and resubmit, almost guaranteed that it will come back Code 91 as well. image
