Does the internet burn to the ground if this card is made?

We know that the card companies keep a keen eye on the forums and hobby trends. I wondered to myself what if this card was made?

Each side features one superstar of today, one superstar of yesterday, one legend and one high roller.

Griffey Trout Harper Vizquel Galarraga Jeter Babe Ruth & Ty Cobb

I'd TOTALLY grab some popcorn and watch that at auction.

I also made a card showing a bunch of players that are collected hardcore but may not necessarily fit in the card above (aside from Griffey) ... sure to make (fr)enemies out of at least 8 different people.

Anyway, on an open market, how much do you think the first card I showed goes for at auction if it were real?

  • Are gallaraga and visquel the high rollers? For me they would be out of place on a card like that. Just a thought.

I'm sure some people would be interested in a some modern Babe Ruth card. I'm not one of em.

I'm sure they would add game used whatever to go along with it, but if I'm reading this correctly, there's four guys featured on a card? Seems like a scrambled mess.

EDIT: First look at this thread the cards did not show up.

Dude, that is one strange idea. Galarraga and the Babe. Barf.
  • I know those cards have there place in the hobby I just think they have kinda hit there high water mark price wise and just kinda sit or if anything go down. Each year some new crazy one of one card is produced and it's a never ending cycle it seems. The cut auto cards can be nice sometimes but for my money I'd just go find a nicely centered lower graded Ruth 33 with nice eye appeal and treasure my 80 year old card and continue to watch from the sidelines on the newer stuff.

For those of you who don't know, the Vizquel and Galarraga low #'ed stuff outsells most everyone else (check the ebay sold listings for 1/1s of these guys). This card is not a fantasy card to appease the masses, but rather to get us thinking how high the player collectors of these guys would go image

Maybe $500, but it would really depend what product it was packaged in, how much that product sold for, and many other factors besides the card itself. The manufactured rarity of 1/1s has pretty much run it's course, IMHO, there's just too many of them out there and anyone can own one now with many selling for $10-20 at auction.

I'm a die-hard player collector and have next to zero interest in post-career issues and 1/1s. I can't imagine any Ruth/Cobb collectors would be interested. For the other player's collectors, I can't see why they would want something as busy as this over a card featuring just their player. If there was some sort of theme to the card (all Yankees, all 1st ballot HOFers, etc.) I could see it selling much higher than the apparently random assemblage.

Did you design those cards? If so, that is very impressive work!

That is too funny, because I would never own the second card without Canseco on it! I guess that is what is great about collecting though ... we all have our own tastes image

I identify Greg Maddux more as Cub nowadays, which makes it 3 Cub greats on one card.

Please keep in mind, this isn't a card for the masses; it is meant to tickle the fancy of the highest paying collectors for us on the sidelines to wonder how high it would go image

Replace Andres Galarraga with Biff Pocoroba or Joe Charboneau and you have a winner
  • saucywombatsaucywombat Posts: 1,223 ✭✭✭
It would get a great deal of attention from a select few.

The crazy thing would be it would probably be the Omar Vizquel crowd driving up the price. (maybe Venezuelan drug lords are into baseball cards?)

Can't imagine it would go for less than $7500 if it existed.

BTW- if the Braves had gotten Galarraga from the Expos with Otis Nixon in 1990 they would have won at least 3 World Series. Not say that deal was on the table but I wish it had happened. Jimmy Kremers for Otis Nixon was still a great trade.
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

  • Don't know if that card going for 7,500 would make me worry about the hobby or help me feel secure that it's healthy.
