I couldn't find it broken, couldn't find it ugly...

Been chasing the varieties of the 3 for the 1823 Busties, and find this one I really liked. It's graded PCGS XF-45 with a CAC sticker. Which variety is the toughest 3 of the 3?

That has tremendous detail for an XF 45.

    Nice original skin, too.

Looks like AU50 details to me. Nice pick-up, Erik.

1823 gave us some fun varieties, particularly due to weird 3 numerals in the date. There's a broken 3, patched 3, ugly 3, tall 3...even a tampered-with 3. The ugly 3 is probably the toughest, but all are can be found with time and effort.

In 1823 the 3 punch had not been used in 10 years and the new style punch, with its curvy upper loop (as opposed to a straight top 3 last used in 1813,) is believed to have been defective. But deemed good enough. It was used to produce O.101 broken/patched 3 halves. Al Overton suggested that the top half of a 2 punch was used twice and that is why the 3 appears broken. But diagnostics prove the shape was not correct. Early research blamed an inept Mint worker, substituting for a gravely ill Robert Scot (Kneass was not hired until Jan 1824). It is illogical to assume he blundered just once and afterward produced flawless 3's.

Nice looking Bustie. Looks to me like the Tampered 3 O-106a. The Broken 3 and the Patched 3 have the 3 *****ed right at the top. The right stand of the 3 on the Ugly 3 is so filled that the upper and lower loops only show as tiny bumps.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Mozin is correct (no surprise). That's not the patched 3 O.101a. It is the "tampered-with" O.106a.

They're close in appearance but you can distinguish them by comparing the crazy slant of the O.101 "3", the position of S7 to the cap, S13 to the curl, the star denticle alignment, the U under O in OF alignment, etc.

Wow, learn something new. Is the tampered 3 the same value as the patched 3? I like the coin and thought it was the patched 3, but oh well...

    Unfortunately not.

The tampered-with 3 isn't a Redbook variety and isn't a registry set requirement. So demand is not the same.

PCGS show no premium for the O.106a and values an XF45 at $325, as opposed to the patched O.101a at $950. Maybe that's not important to you. It's a nice coin. Enjoy it!

    Lance.

edit to add: There is also a patched 3 O.102, a result of the same obverse married to another reverse. It is scarcer and more valuable than the O.101a.
