PAN Show

I went to the PAN Show in Monroeville PA yesterday. Stopped by Pat & BJ Coins booth for a chat with PVetter and Kranky . I sold off some Buff's as I'm now focusing on Southern Mint half eagles. Also picked up a 1889 Morgan in AU for my flood commemorative set. I'm from Johnstown PA which was destroyed by the collapse of the Southfork dam on May 31, 1889.

I also was at the PAN show yesterday. The floor seemed to be bustling, especially in the early afternoon. There were a bunch of tables I had to wait my turn to look at.

I did a lot more purchasing than usual at the show. Some small value stuff (Ikes for the grandkids at barely over face, a little raw gold and silver because I like touching coins not plastic sometimes) and a couple of larger purchases. The most surprising to me was an 1806 half cent in an old ANACS slab. I have a date collection of those from 1800 on, and was missing only a couple of years, so I really hadn't imagined filling any of the empty slots at a local coin show.

I had nice conversations with a number of dealer friends, and came away with some ideas for my next collecting direction...which is yet to be finalized.

PAN is always a fun time, and I feel lucky that it's local.

I also attended the show Friday. I made the 3 1/2 hour drive. No major traffic issues on PA Turnpike. Bing directions were bad so I was lost for 30 minutes before the show. I liked the show overall. This was my first PAN show. It was a little small for a 150 table show imo but everyone was very friendly. I was happy to see some Dealers that I don't normally see in the Midwest. I was looking for varieties (Lincoln/Buffalo). I was extremely happy with my results. I was able to Cherrypick a NGC AU58 1919-D 2 Feather Buff. I believe it is a weakly struck Mint STate example but I guess PCGS will be the judge of that! Also Cherried a 19-S 2 Feather in NGC 15. There was a good mix of Dealers and I'll be back next year. Monroeville seemed like a very nice little Burb. I give the show two thumbs up.

We were at the show all 3 days, my overall opinion is WOW or OMG.... The show had less dealers setting up this time than usual, Richmond Coin Club changed their dates to conflict with PAN and several of the dealers that set up at both shows were forced to choose. I look forward to hearing reports from Reeded Edge, Pat & BJ Coins, kranky, and anyone else who was at the show.

We donated our time to man the PAN-Auction tables all 3 days. This is a fantastic fundraiser for the club, the first auction raised over $500.

Thursday: The show opens to the public at noon, PAN members can get in an hour early, I bet there were over 100 people waiting in line to get in just before noon. As mentioned above the floor was alive, reminds me of days past when bourse floors consistently were packed. I talked to one of the dealers that has been setting up at this show for decades, he made the statement, "When the doors opened, they just kept pouring in."

Friday: The show opens to the public at 10, PAN members can get in an hour early. I was pleasantly surprised to see the bourse floor just as busy as Thursday. This was our busiest day, the auction closes with the close of the show at 6PM. Last show the last 2 hours of Friday we spent with dealers at our tables helping them with their last minute bids. This show the dealers didn't have that luxury, they were busy right up to the last minute, it was amazing.

Saturday: The show opens to the public at 10, PAN members can get in an hour early. You would think Saturday would be the busiest day, but oddly it was not. I would estimate that over half of the bidders picked up their items, which helps us out with shipping and saves them a few bucks. Several dealers stopped by the table to apologize for not having time to stop by and bid, they were just too busy. A few members dropped off consignments for the next Auction which will be in October.

This photo is from the last PAN show.... I would love to see some photos from this show.
